5K means roughly 5000 pixels wide. 4K means roughly 4000 pixels wide. 5K is obviously bigger than 4K — says so right in the name! So, while 5K only sounds 25% bigger than 4K based on the name, it's actually over 50% bigger in terms of raw pixel count.
8K resolution refers to an image or display resolution with a width of approximately 8000 pixels. 8K UHD (7680 × 4320) is the highest resolution defined in the Rec. 2020 (UHDTV) standard.
Retina displays have little to do with the resolution. It's just a resolution where at eye level you won't see any pixels, while 4k TVs (really UltraHD, because they're 2160p tvs not 4k tvs), can show pixels if the TV is large enough.
A true 4K display has a resolution of 4,096×2,160 pixels, but most 4K displays you will find are actually "Ultra HD" displays with slightly lower 3,840×2,160 resolutions -- sometimes called 2160p. 5K displays have a resolution of 5,120×2,880 pixels, or about seven times the pixel density of a 1,920×1,080 display.
5K resolution refers to display formats with a horizontal resolution of around 5,000 pixels. The most common 5K resolution is 5120 × 2880, which has an aspect ratio of 16:9 with around 14.7 million pixels (just over seven times as many pixels as 1080p Full HD), with four times the linear resolution of 720p.
Retina 5K display is a brand name used by Apple for screen that has a 5,120-by-2,880 resolution, which differs distinctly from the previously known 4K Ultra HD resolution. Generally, it's great to play ultra HD 4K video on a 5K iMac display as you can view all of the images at their true native 4K resolution.
A product is considered obsolete if it was discontinued more than seven years ago. Taking a look at macOS compatibility (discussed below), we can see that generally, Macs are eligible for the latest macOS version for about seven years. Apple generally supports each macOS version for three years.
The iMac is also a pretty good value, because it comes with that high-resolution screen. If you wanted to configure a Mac mini and a 4K iMac with the same specs, you'd only have $400 left over to buy a 4K display. For the 5K iMac the figure is $800.
Apple iMac (27-inch, 2019)
The new iMac is packing with 8th- and 9th-generation desktop-class processors, letting this stylish all-in-one reach that fabled 8-core performance. If you're looking for an all-in-one Mac, the new 27-inch iMac might just be the best Mac for you, at least if you're on a budget. The iMac continues to be a fine system that runs fast given its components thanks to Mac OS. And since the prices haven't changed while the innards have, the base 27-inch configuration is a good value, if an uninspiring one.
In 2020 the iMac will turn 22 years old. Obviously the iMac has evolved over the years, with faster processors, better graphics and RAM improvements, but the boosts awarded by these updates are no longer enough to excuse the imitations of the design - and there are disadvantages to the iMac's design.
There are other models worth considering depending on your needs.
- Best Overall: iMac 5K.
- Best Entry Level: iMac 4K.
- Best Secondary: Non-Retina iMac.
- Best for Pros: iMac Pro.
Identify your iMac model
- Find the serial number printed on the underside of your Mac, near the regulatory markings. It's also on the original packaging, next to a barcode label.
- The original packaging might also show an Apple part number, such as MMQA2xx/A (“xx” is a variable that differs by country or region).
The same Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port can be used as a video input that allows your iMac to serve as a monitor for another Mac. The Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt-equipped iMac can only receive DisplayPort-compatible video and audio.
Release date. The new iMac arrived on 19 March 2019. Apple last updated the iMac on 5 June 2017 during WWDC, so the iMac range went about 21 months without an update.
You can turn off the retina resolution using either command line settings or an app like switchresx, as previously stated. However, it will either result in very small everything or rather blurry everything (compared to the retina settings). OS X can enable/disable retina rendering on per-app basis.
Click the system menu, go to preferences then display, click on the drop down resolution menu, and select the resolution you want. Click apply, then confirm the changes you've made. You can see what the resolution of your screen is so important.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy. Select Camera. Select the checkbox next to an app to allow it to access your camera. Deselect the checkbox to turn off access for that app.
Change display settings
- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Display.
- Tap the setting that you want to change. To see more settings, tap Advanced.
To change your screen resolution

Click the drop-down list next to Resolution, move the slider to the resolution you want, and then click Apply. If you want to increase the size of windows on your second monitor, simply return to the Display settings. Click on the screen whose scale you want to adjust, then drag the slider marked “Change the size of text, apps and other items” to the right to increase the size of windows. To save changes, just click Apply.
If you can't access the green resize button because it is off screen, just click on the window you want resized and then navigate to the Window menu and pull down to 'Zoom'. This will automatically resize the active window to fit on the screen.
Retina Display is a marketing term developed by Apple to refer to devices and monitors that have a resolution and pixel density so high – roughly 300 or more pixels per inch – that a person is unable to discern the individual pixels at a normal viewing distance.
Apple says the new 21.5-inch iMac models deliver up to 60 percent faster performance than the previous generation, while the new 27-inch iMac models deliver up to 2.4 times faster performance than the previous generation, narrowing the gap between the high-end standard iMac and the iMac Pro workstation.
The 27-inch iMac screen has a 16×9 aspect ratio — the same as HD — and offers a resolution of 2,560-x-1,440 pixels. That's much larger than HD resolution, which is 1920-x-1080. The screen is almost too big. It's quite a trek with the little Mighty Mouse to move the cursor from one end of the screen to the other.
Should you buy the iMac (2019)? The 2019 iMac is faster, more powerful, and with better graphics than ever before. Apple now offers the iMac with an upgraded 8th or 9th generation Coffee Lake processor, DDR4 memory, and improved AMD graphics. It's one of the fastest Macs on the market (almost as fast as the iMac Pro).
In short, yes you do. Mac's are not immune to malware and Mac-targeted attacks are increasingly prevalent. Following best practices for securing your device and using built-in security features can help, but an antivirus software can serve to protect your device even further.
Apple uses the same grade of panels Dell uses for their Ultrasharp line. Apple screens have that 'pop' because they are glossy with that pane of glass they put over top of the panel. They have a full pane of glass over the panel. Something you don't get on other standalone monitors.
It's not because Apple can't make a touchscreen Mac. They won't remove the iconic menu bar from the Mac desktop, for instance, just as they'd never add it to the iPad. "It is great to provide two different ways to solve some of the same things, but they also do very unique things that the other doesn't," Schiller says.
The 21.5-inch iMac with a 4K display will start at $1,299, the same price as the one before it. That's for a machine running on an eighth-generation quad-core Intel processor. Meanwhile, the 27-inch 5K model starts at $1,799. Higher-end configurations will almost certainly cost much more.
