- Click the drop-down arrow on the folder or file you want to modify permissions to, then click on "Manage Permissions"
- Click "Stop Inheriting Permission" to give this file/folder unique permissions.
On the Details pane, under the Has Access header, you'll see the People icon, the Links icon, and/or the Email icon. These options vary depending on how you have shared the file or folder. Select Manage access and: To stop sharing the file entirely, click Stop sharing.
Assign a new permission level to a group
- On your website or team site, click Settings.
- On the Site Settings page, under Users and Permissions, click Site Permissions.
- Select the check box next to the user or group to which you want to assign the new permission level.
- On the Permissions tab, click Edit User Permissions.
Follow these steps.
- Create different view based on your requirement.
- Go to site settings --> People and Group --> Groups --> New --> New Group.
- Give the name and choose the permission level for group members .
- Open your group --> new --> add users to this group.
- Go back to your list.
How to share SharePoint folders externally
- Make sure you are using a modern document library.
- Right-click above the folder you want to share, and click Share.
- From the pop-up that appears, choose Specific People, then click Apply.
- Type the external user's email and hit Send.
- OK, your part is done!
How to Break Inheritance
- Go to Site Settings.
- Click on Site Permissions (Under the Users and Permissions section)
- Click 'Stop Inheriting Permissions'
If you want to restrict access to certain Microsoft Teams files, you can simply edit the access permissions in SharePoint or OneDrive. This will lock the respective files preventing users from editing them.
Limited Access. Enables a user or group to browse to a site page or library to access a specific content item when they do not have permissions to open or edit any other items in the site or library. This level is automatically assigned by SharePoint when you provide access to one specific item.
As mentioned, there are 3 site specific permission groups – Members, Owners and Visitors, and their Permission Level is displayed to the far right. Users can be added to any of these groups and they will be granted the appropriate level of access to the SharePoint site only.
If you want to quickly view all the unique permissions you have at a site level, follow these steps:
- Gear Icon > Site Permissions.
- Click Advanced permissions settings.
- You will get to see the site-level security groups.
- It will no display lists or libraries on your site that have unique permissions.

- In Windows Explorer, right-click the file or folder you want to work with.
- From the pop-up menu, select Properties, and then in the Properties dialog box click the Security tab.
- In the Name list box, select the user, contact, computer, or group whose permissions you want to view.
Have a look at some of the File and Folder permissions settings. Right click on the files/folders you don't want 'Steam' to access, click the 'Security' tab, then 'Edit' under permissions. Then navigate through the list of users displayed, select 'Steam', and select 'Deny' under 'Full Access'.
How to Change Share Permissions
- Right-click the shared folder.
- Click “Properties”.
- Open the “Sharing” tab.
- Click “Advanced Sharing”.
- Click “Permissions”.
- Select a user or group from the list.
- Select either “Allow” or “Deny” for each of the settings.
Setting Permissions
- Access the Properties dialog box.

Steps to modify Share permissions :
- Go to Management tab.
- Select File Server Management., Under Permission Management, select Modify Share permissions.
- Choose the folders whose share permissions you want to modify from the 'Select' option.
To select documents to lock down:
- In Working Papers, open the file that you intend to lock down.
- In the Document Manager, right-click the column header, then click Show | Lock Down.
- In the Lock Down column, select the documents you want to include in the lock down, and deselect the documents you want to exclude.

Network Administration: Granting Share Permissions
- Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key and clicking Computer; then browse to the folder whose permissions you want to manage.
- Right-click the folder you want to manage and then choose Properties from the contextual menu.
- Click the Sharing tab; then click Advanced Sharing.
- Click Permissions.
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers. Right-click the user account that you want to allow remote access, and then click Properties. Click the Dial-in tab, click Allow access, and then click OK.

Open your SharePoint site settings → Click “Site Permissions”. Click “Check Permissions” → Enter the username of the user whose permissions you want to check -> Click “Check Now”.

Edit – Can add, edit and delete lists; can view, add, update and delete list items and documents. Contribute – Can view, add, update, and delete list items and documents.
Remove unique permissions SharePoint Online
