Compulsory education in South AfricaEducation is compulsory from the age of seven (grade 1) to the age of 15 (grade 9). The education system runs all the way from grade 0 (otherwise known as reception) to grade 12.
In South Africa, Grade 7 is the final year of primary school and is also the final year before High School as there is no such thing as Middle School in South Africa. Pupils (called Learners by the Department of Education) are usually between the ages of 11,12 and 13.
Grade 000 (3-4 years old)
Grade R is compulsory, but not all primary schools offer grade R. Grade R may also be attended at pre-school facilities. Other grades that can be completed at a pre-school centre include grade 00 and grade 000 (although the 000 and 00 designations are not universally applied).

Grade R does not just prepare children for Grade 1. It prepares children for a lifetime of learning. The R in Grade R stands for Reception. It is the year that our children are received into the exciting world of 'big' school.
In South Africa, public schools are not automatically free of charge. While many are “no fee” schools, no special schools – where most children with disabilities are erroneously sent to – fall into that category. So, while most primary school age children do not pay fees, those with disabilities often do.
The IMF said that the causes of South Africa's low quality of education are complex and multifaceted. “The consensus in the literature is that inadequate funding is not the primary cause of lagging performance, although the distribution of resources may be problematic,” it said.
However, 13 in the 7th grade is fine. You are not a LITTLE kid, but a teenager. Little kids are like 6 year olds.
The Department of Basic Education's age-grade norms state that a child should be seven in grade 1, eight in grade 2 and so on. So at the age of 18, ideally Grade 12 learners will be 18 years old: yet half of them are not.

Grade 0 or Grade R? There is no standardised name for the year before grade 1. I've used the term grade R to refer to this class for children aged 5 turning 6, but some schools call this grade 0 (and grade 00 the year before) – while others refer to grade 0 as the year children are four turning 5.
Tips for Passing 6th Grade Classes
- Attend Class. Consistent classroom attendance is an important step for students looking to successfully pass the 6th grade.
- Take Notes. Students should work on taking careful notes during their class periods.
- Study Regularly.
- Join a Study Group.
- Hire a Tutor.
- Review Online.
An NQF 4 is equivalent to Grade 12 or Matric. This is run by colleges and it combines theory and practical experience to prepare you for work in a specific industry or occupation but it ends at NQF L4.

South Africa has more than 25,000 schools, 23,000 of which are public schools that cater for more than 12-million learners.
A school term usually includes between 9 and 12 weeks of instruction and around 200 days of schooling. The first of the four terms, starting in January, is usually the longest term.
For British Secondary schools, Year 7 (Modern) is equivalent to First Year (1970s) and Third Form (1950s). All of these starting at age 11 in September.
The introduction of a General Education Certificate (GEC) at the end of Grade 9 symbolises that a pupil has finished one phase of schooling, not that they can leave school, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has said. Grade 1 is age five turning six by 30 June in the year of admission.
Educational attainment is still low in South Africa. In 2018, over half (59%) of 25-64 year-olds in South Africa had attained an upper secondary education as the highest level achieved, well above the G20 average of 32% and the OECD average of 38%, while 26% had not attained upper secondary education.
When you start at university, any mark over 50% is a great grade. Getting a mark over 50% means that you are beginning to understand the difficult work of your degree. Getting over 60% is excellent because it means you have demonstrated a deep knowledge of your subject to the marker.

The basic NSC with no access to higher education programmes requires a learner to achieve three subjects with a minimum of 40% including the Home Language (HL), and a further 3 subjects can be passed at 30%.
A learner must pass: Pass one official language at Home Language level at 40% Pass 3 additional subjects at 40% (excluding Life Orientation) Pass 2 other subjects at 30%
Distinction: A superior performance; mark range 75-84.
