You don't want to waste money, but at the same time, you want to make sure your vehicle starts in the morning. One thing that most can agree on is that the maximum amount of time you should leave the engine block heater plugged in for is four hours. Any more and you're just wasting electricity.
Block Heater AlternativesGlue-on oil-pan heaters, like the Wolverine heater, use a thin heating pad, powered by an electrical outlet, that's stuck to the vehicle oil pan with a heavy-duty adhesive. This type of heater heats the engine oil directly, instead of the engine coolant, like a block heater.
A block heater warms the engine coolant, which warms the engine block and the oil. Plugging in your car before you start it can also lower your car's emissions — and your gasoline bill, says Natural Resources Canada.
How much electricity does a engine block heater use? The block heater costs about 7¢ per hour to run at the national average electrical rate of 10¢ per kWh. Of course rates vary, look for the rate on your power bill and multiply by 0.7 to find how much your heater costs per hour.
Natural Resources Canada (NRC) says a block heater can lower your car's emissions and gas bill. Your fuel economy may improve by as much as 10 percent. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) says you'll save 15 percent in fuel consumption over the first 20 kilometers you drive.
Set a multimeter to the "ohms" setting, then touch one probe to each of the prongs on the block heater plug and read the resistance. An ideal resistance reading will be about 20 to 30 ohms, but if there is a "0" or infinite resistance, the block heater is not functional.
Block heaters can rang in cost between around $40.00 to around $120.00. With the typical and most popular ones in use today, seem to be right around $70.00!
Plugging a vehicle in has nothing to do with the battery, alternator or anti-freeze. The purpose of plugging in when in extreme cold snaps is to keep the oil in the pan warm so it will turn over easier. Your battery may also be crap if it's older too but that will have nothing to do with you plugging your car in.
Car batteries stay charged by harnessing the extra power of the car's engine, and most can go for at least five years without needing to be replaced or recharged. But even the best car batteries will run out of power eventually — or lose their charge prematurely when you leave your lights on too long.
How to Keep an Engine Block Warm in Cold Weather
- Park your vehicle near a wall or inside a carport or garage. Anything that blocks the wind helps to keep the engine warm.
- Place a blanket on the engine beneath the hood. An electric blanket is ideal, but any blanket will work.
- Cover your vehicle with a full-sized car cover.
Engine block heaters are a simple solution to many issues caused by cold temperatures. While most vehicles should come with a block heater, some newer models or imports may not. Ask when you are looking to buy, or mark down that option when purchasing a new vehicle.
- Get your battery checked.
- Keep driving for 10 minutes or longer.
- Park your car in a garage, if possible.
- Wrap your car battery in a thermal blanket.
- Charge up your car battery with more than a trickle charger.
So no, they aren't mandatory nor are they required. Block heaters serve a reasonable purpose. They keep the oil liquified, and therefore it provides better protection on startup. But in the end, a well-maintained car should start up under any conditions we have here in Calgary.
The block heater is rated for 1000 watts, so your timer will do just fine.
This engine block heater does have an internal thermostat that operates the heater based on the manufacturer specs for the vehicle it is designed to fit. This particular unit will only operate when the coolant temperature drops below 0 degrees which is needed for a 3.6L engine.
And how much fuel do you use idling your truck? block heater is 750 watts.
unfortunately a diesel air heater will tax a single leisure battery without any means of recharging it.. they draw 10/12 amps at start up when the glow plug is in use, and although it isn't for very long maybe 30 seconds, that load can drop the battery voltage to a level that will shut the unit down..
All of the Dodge trucks with the Cummins diesel engine have a block heater already installed. It is located on the passenger side of the engine behind and to the left of the oil filter. Once you locate the heater, remove the black protective cap and install the heater cable.
If you know your KW/hr cost just multiply it by 0.75 and you have your cost/hour; i.e. 10 cents per KW/hr and it will cost you 7.5 cents/hour plus taxes; which is about $2 per day (24 hours plugged in).
It may not include freight and pre-delivery inspection which has to be included in our prices. It may not include a block heater, but everybody in Manitoba puts a block heater in their car."
