The Academy will be your “home away from home†for the next several months (you do not live on Academy grounds). Your training day will typically begin at 0645 hours and end at approximately 1700 hours. You must remain on Academy grounds during training hours.
Now, tattoos and body alterations on arms and legs are permitted after they have been approved by the Chief of Police or the Chief's designee. Chief Weathers reviewed the policies of other law enforcement agencies and discussed the issue with several officers and community members before finalizing the change.
There are no minimum or maximum height requirements to join the police force.
You must be 18 or over when you apply to be a new Police Constable. The upper age limit is 57. This is three years less than the compulsory retirement age of 60 and allows for the two year probationary period and the expectation of a minimum of one year of service following probation.
The duration of the training in the Police Academy varies for the different agencies. It usually takes about 13 to 19 weeks on average but can last up to six months. Note that it is possible to complete the Police Academy prior to applying for a police officer.
Police AcademyYour training will be conducted at the Louisville Metro Police Training Academy over the course of 24 weeks. You will not live at this academy but rather commute five days a week. Your training will be in the areas of: Traffic stops.
Most agencies expect officers to have a high school diploma or GED at a minimum. Some agencies require a bachelor's degree or a minimum number of college credit hours. Others offer additional pay based on educational attainment. Regardless, education beyond high school will only help you in your law enforcement career.

The Cost of Police AcademyThe average cost of police academy is about $5,000 and many times the department that hires you will reimburse a percentage of that cost. The fees should include both the cost of tuition and any other type of cost associated with police academy, such as the uniform.
Officers receive a full starting salary while training at a police academy. Once you successfully graduate police academy, you will likely get a bump in salary. Depending on the police department where you work, this salary bump can be as much as $2,000 or $3,000 more than what you earned while training.
Is the Police Academy harder than basic training? Most police academies are known to be more difficult than basic training, but it can depend on where you study. Basic training teaches the core skills and knowledge to succeed in a military environment. It requires hard work and determination.
Majority of law enforcement officers are slotted out to work a forty hour work week. These hours can, and usually do include working nights, holidays and weekends. Getting held over for overtime is not out of the ordinary either.
What is the Average police salary? According to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for police patrol officers and detectives was $67,290 as of May 2020. The lowest 10% earned less than $39,130, and the highest 10% earned more than $113,860.
