The most common sizes for a kitchen sink are 30" or 33", however a standard size could measure anywhere between 24" and 36" in length. The bulk of what you find while shopping will fall within this size range. Generally, sinks up to 30" will contain one large single bowl.
Most sinks are undermounted under granite, which effectively makes a 9" deep sink 10 1/4" deep. That is just too deep if you are going to be working at the bottom of the sink.
Base cabinet sizeTo determine the maximum sink size for your base cabinet, measure the interior of your cabinet and subtract two to three inches from each dimension. A 36″ base cabinet can handle a 33″ sink at most; a 30″ cabinet should be fitted with a sink no larger than 27″ wide.
5 Things You Should Consider Before Buying a Kitchen Sink
- Consider the material. When it comes to kitchen sinks, there are many materials to choose from: porcelain, stainless steel, cast iron, just to name a few.
- Choose a drop-in or undermount. What's the difference?
- Select the right size.
- Determine if you'll need to adjust your cabinets.
- Pick a side: single or double bowl?
According to Williams of Cherin's Appliances, customers typically choose a single-bowl dimension of about 28 to 30 inches long, and “they're quite happy with that—it gives them enough room to do two things in the sink at once.”
Sink Size and ShapeMost round bathroom sink bowls are 16 to 20 inches in diameter, and most rectangular sinks are 19 to 24 inches wide and 16 to 23 inches front to back. The typical basin depth is 5 to 8 inches.

All faucet holes are of a standard size of 1-3/8 inches while some faucets are of 1-1/2 inches. When replacing kitchen faucets you need to consider the number of holes in your sink and the distance between the holes. For a 3-hole kitchen sink, the kitchen faucet plate, called a deck plate, covers three holes.
Using a tape measure, begin at the bottom of the sink walls just above where the walls start to curve inward toward the drain. Measure the width side to side from that point to the mirroring point on the other side of the sink. Repeat the same steps to measure the depth, front to back. You now have the width and depth.
The rule of thumb is 1.5 times the length of the drawer slide. If you have a standard depth kitchen cabinet then the normal length of drawer slide is 22”. If you multiply 22” x 1.5 = 33”. You can go wider, but the wider you go the more chance that the slide will not pull out as smoothly as you hope or expect.
There are many different kitchen faucet and sink designs available, but they're not always compatible. Start by taking a look at your kitchen sink to determine how many pre-drilled faucet mounting holes are available.
Corner Base Cabinet DimensionsAccording to Direct Sinks, the easiest way to determine the maximum size for your diagonal corner sink base cabinet is to consider the corner cabinet as having a standard 24-inch cabinet measurement. This means you'll need a sink with a maximum size that's no more than 23 inches deep.
Common 24-inch sink shapes are a square and D-bowl. Sinks 24 inches wide must sit in at least a 27-inch sink base cabinet. The most common sink size is approximately 30 inches.
In terms of nails, the higher the gauge number the thinner the nail. Hence, an 18-gauge nail is a little thinner than a 16-gauge.
Gauge is the standard unit of measure for sheet steel and wire products. The lower the number, the thicker the steel. Therefore, 16 gauge is thicker than 18 gauge steel. The reason we promote using 16 gauge steel for your sinks versus 18 gauge is 16 is more rigid.
Single Bowl Vs Double Bowl SinksThe two most popular are single bowl and double bowl. You probably already have one of either in your kitchen right now.

How to determine the minimum cabinet size:
- Measure the cabinet size under the existing sink or where the new sink will go.
- Measure from gable to gable (left to right). See diagram.
- Be sure to measure from outside edge to outside edge.
- To save time, double check your measurements.
A sink base cabinet is a cabinet that has been designed to use with a sink. Sink base cabinets also do not have drawers, which interfere with the water lines, waste traps and any other pipes that are under the sink. However, the cabinets do have false drawer fronts, which balance out the cabinet's appearance.
Well, our sink base units are made slightly differently to other base units and come with 3/4 high back panels. This means that there is a small opening at the back of the unit, right at the top, to aid with plumbing and drainage. The back panels that are fitted to these sink base units are fixed into position.
Base Cabinet SizesA standard base kitchen cabinet will measure about 34-1/2″ high and 35″ to 36″ high from your kitchen floor with a countertop. The standard depth of a base kitchen cabinet is 24″ without a countertop and 25″ to 26″ with a countertop.
Lay the tape measure along the bottom of the cabinet; place the end against the back of the cabinet, then pull out the tape until the front edge of the cabinet to find the front-to-back (depth) measurement. Next, measure the total outer width of your cabinet.
Setting the StandardSingle bowl sinks come in sizes as wide as 33 inches, while double-bowl units can measure 48 inches. Triple bowl units may be as wide as 60 inches. Narrow trough sinks, designed for easy food preparation, generally measure 8 to 14 inches front-to-back and can stretch 50 inches or wider.
Undermount SinksIn this case there should be about 3 inches of space from the edge of the sink to the wall/backsplash. In most cases this will allow at least a one inch rim around the front of the sink. Again, this measurement will depend on the size of your sink as well as your countertop depth.
