As a rough guideline, anything between 50 and 200 hours is going to sound impressive and show that you have made a commitment. However, once you get above 200 hours, you should start to consider if your free time could be better spent doing something else.

If you do it through the Courts you do what they say (which I think is 7 hours a day). If the Court is allowing private community service I think 14 hour total is okay but check with your lawyer.
Community service provides students with the opportunity to show compassion, leadership, creativity, and depth. Colleges don't just want students who will do well in class – they want students who will also engage outside of the classroom and make a positive impact on campus. But that's not all.

- Start your own nonprofit.
- Make hygiene kits for the homeless.
- Create your own service project.
- Get involved with church-related activities.
- Run a workshop for your friends to teach them personal finance tips.
- Organize an event to raise money for charity.
- Volunteer at a food bank, food pantry, or soup kitchen.
There is no direct proof required, to be shared along with your application. But, at least on the major volunteering activities / ECs, they should have been mentioned in recommendation letters and as applicable - in your essays. Where do you put volunteer hours on college applications?
Helping the Hungry and/or Homeless
- Build a house with Habitat for Humanity.
- Donate your old clothes.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
- Donate old eyeglasses to an organization that collects that and distributes them to people in need.
- Donate non-perishable food to a food bank.
- Donate blankets to a homeless shelter.
It is up to the Judge that sentenced you. You cannot just pay for your community service hours without getting permission from the Court. They do not always grant it, and sometimes will let you buy a certain amount but not all of your hours.

Generally, you have the option of buying out your community service hours unless the Court specifically prohibited it at the time of sentencing. Talk to your probation officer about the buy-out.
The quickest way to get hours without doing them is to make a donation to a legitimate non-profit but finding a non-profit that will accept your donation can be challenging and thats why we have done the work for you. We have found non-profits that will take donations in exchange for community service hours.
Volunteer at your local schools! You can tutor children after school, help plant a school garden for a classroom, help coach sports, or help with donations of school supplies. Community Centers. Community centers, like the YMCA or Boys and Girls Club, are great sources to get your hours in with a variety of programs.
A few simple steps can help you make sure your volunteering efforts are eligible for college credit, including the following:
- Verify the requirements.
- Understand the costs.
- Make sure your volunteer work is relevant to your field of studies.
- Document your work.
- Work with a mentor.
Help From Home has a mix of volunteering activities you can do from home, both online and without a computer. Most are microvolunteering – tasks that require just a few minutes or a few hours. Idealist has many volunteer tasks listed on its site that can be completed online.

- Under the Events tab, click the drop-down menu near the top of the page labeled Dates and choose Previous 0-36 months.
- Click on the appropriate event.
- Click on the Hours subtab.
- Enter the hours worked for your volunteers.
- Click the Save Hours button.
Volunteering promotes leadership and awareness as students take an active role in their communities. Requiring community service allows schools to help students become more educated in how they can help others and the impact they can have. When students volunteer, they can gain real skills they can use in their jobs.

It's not just unethical and, in some cases, a violation of court orders that leads to additional charges – it's stupid to fake community service hours. Are there ever consequences for faking community service for the courts? Yes. Often, it's a felony charge from the court and a revocation of probation.
Consequences of a Violation of Your Probation:The court can sentence you to jail time before allowing you to continue with your probation. The court can impose the maximum sentence of jail time for the underlying offense and terminate your probation entirely.
It's done frequently. It's called virtual volunteering. However, just as with onsite, in-person community service, you must get permission from the court to work with the nonprofit you want to work with. Do NOT pay a company for online community service - these are scams .
