ANSI (American National Standards Institute) defined a regular series of paper sizes based around the Letter (8.5" x 11") format, with this becoming the A sizes and larger sizes being B,C,D & E. ANSI A sized paper is commonly referred to as Letter and ANSI B as Ledger or Tabloid.
Dimensions. A5 measures 148 × 210 millimeters or 5.83 × 8.27 inches. In PostScript, its dimensions are rounded off to 420 × 595 points.
It's also a common notebook size. A5 is also extremely common in notebooks. TIP: The handy way to remember the relationship of any of the A sizes, is that each size is half of the smaller number. So A4 is half of A3, A5 is half of A4, A6 is half of A5 and A7 is half of A6.
Some booklets, for example, may require a paper size that sits between a standard A4 and
A5.

Paper Sizes: A5 & Half Letter
A5 is used in countries outside the US and is very similar to the US half letter size. It's 5.83 by 8.27 inches. It's what you get if you cut an A4 piece of paper right in half. Half letter is what you get if you cut a letter size piece of paper right in half, so it is 5.5 by 8.5 inches.The North American paper sizes are based on traditional formats with arbitrary aspect ratios.
