He's a bad guy in the same vein that Flynn from the second Uncharted game is. He is easily swayed by money but still reliable. And was quickly willing to give his life in order to stop his own actions from causing Drake any harm.
In Uncharted 1 Nathan Drake is 31 years old, this has been confirmed by Amy Hennig and Nolan North in various interview. Also we know this because it is shown in Uncharted 3 that Nate met Sully when he was 15 and it jumps 20 years to the present, meaning he was 35 years old in Uncharted 3.
Sam jumps in the way of the bullet, though accidentally knocks Nathan off a cliff in the process. Nathan has a pretty perilous tumble, smacks his head on a jagged rock, and then falls to the jungle floor below. In my theory, this is where Nathan Drake dies, and what proceeds is his version of an afterlife.
Sam also has a Boston accent, so that's another hint at where they live.
Uncharted is by far the superior game. Uncharted has a better story, but overall game play experience is where tomb raider is supreme. Uncharted is a great series, but it's a bit too cinematic, whereas Tomb Raider feels more natural.
