They live in anemones which are like plants under the sea. Anemones eat fish by killing them with their tentacles which are poisonous. Scientists believe that clown fish are protected from the poison because they are coated in a type of mucus.
In most circumstances, it's best to keep only a pair of clownfish in one tank. In the wild clownfish can live in a group based on hierarchy with a dominant female and male breeding pair and a group of juveniles. When/if the female dies, the dominant male becomes the female and the next in line changes to the male.
Clownfish can't survive without a host anemone, whose stinging tentacles protect them. Of the roughly 1,000 anemone species, only 10 host clownfish. A layer of mucus likely keeps the clownfish from being stung by the anemone's tentacles.
Either way, you will need to raise the fry in a separate aquarium as clownfish are known to eat their own eggs and hatchlings. Be sure to get the extra tank ready ahead of time. Feed your clownfish hatchlings. Clownfish hatchlings should be fed live rotifers, which are microscopic aquatic animals.
Some have said that keeping more than one clown may result in territorial fighting. Others have said that two should be fine in a 10 gallon; one might even change sex and become a pair.
Though they are overall very hardy and easy to care, Clownfish can still get sick, so need regular monitoring and care. This includes regular water testing and tank cleaning. The water parameters need to be constant.
The clownfish may sleep at the surface of the tank on its side. It may even live at the surface of the aquarium. It may also adopt a shell or hollowed out piece of coral as a "pseudo-anemone", and will stay near or in this adopted "host".
The simple answer to how many clownfish that you can have in your aquarium is 1 or 2. For a while, you may be able to keep 3 or 4 clownfish together, but eventually, 2 of the clowns will pair off and start to pick on the rest of the clowns.

Could a Clownfish live in a 5 gallon tank, yes, but it won't be happy.Clowns dont have to be kept in pairs. She will be fine alone which leaves you the opportunity to add a different fish.
As others have mentioned, an air pump/stone in a typical reef tank is pointless. However, they do have their uses for culturing marine critters and/or baby fish, so it's certainly worth having one on hand. Just one example that I can think of is hatching baby brine shrimp for your clownfish fry once they hatch.
Cost Total and Considerations
As you can see, a beautiful 10-gallon aquarium for clownfish represents a notable investment. Your grand total will be between about $370 to $420, depending on the size of clownfish you choose.I wouldn't make it a habit of going that long but mine go routinely 2-3 days days without any "Direct" feeding. Please note this does NOT go for ALL fish or ALL tanks.
No, you cannot keep clown fish and goldfish together. Goldfish is a freshwater fish. Clown fish is a saltwater fish. With that said, no matter what you do (get males and females) you cannot keep them together.
Prepared foods, such as many flake foods, are concentrated food and (depending on the type) can supply the fish with everything they need. Feeding your fish a little bit of food several times per day is closer to the way they eat in the wild than feeding them a bunch of food every 2 or 3 days.
Clownfish Tank Setup
Nano tanks of about 8 to 10 gallons are on the small end for the Ocellaris Clownfish but the fish will still do quite well in a tank that size. In fact, some breeders will put pairs in a 10 gallon tank for spawning. Can clown fish be in the same tank as a betta fish? They is also possible kept with other reef safe fishes , tangs , gobies , some wrasses , everything not truly aggressive and if they have an anemone these people are generally quite safe from anything not damsels.
IMO a clownfish should have a 15-20 gallon tank, although some do keep them in 10 gallon tanks, it would not be my preference. A better choice would be a small goby like a yellow watchman, hi fin banded, clown or citron, etc. These gobies are less active swimmers and don't need a ton of space.
Here are some great tank-mates for clownfish, depending on the setup of the tank:
- Damselfish. Tangs. Wrasses.
- Blennies. Angelfish. Dartfish.
- Puffers Soft or Hard Corals. Gobies Marine Invertebrates. Pseudochromis. Anemones.
We generally recommend that on average, you turn over your aquarium volume four times per hour. This means that if you have a 30 gallon tank, you need a pump and filter with flow rates of around 120 gph.
The Biorb comes with instructions that says we should feed each fish 4-6 pellets a day of Hikari Marine S. Now these pellets are tiny - bite size. My clownfish is very happy to have them but he always seems to want more and he definetly can have more than 6 pellets a day.
Depending on species and size, feed small amounts 1 to 2 times daily, no more than fish will eat in 1 to 2 minutes. Thaw frozen food before feeding.
Member. Clowns will eat flake food, brine shrimp, and just about anything that will fit in their mouth. Anenomes will eat small chuncks of shrimp.
Rotifers make a great food for clownfish. These are tiny organisms you can purchase online or culture yourself. You want to feed so that there are 5 to 15 rotifers per milliliter of aquarium water. You can will also want to hatch baby brine shrimp yourself.
In nature the diet of clownfish consists of crustaceans (such as copepods and amphipods), algae, polychaete worms and leftovers from the anemone's meal. Our captive bred fish are conditioned to eat a variety of aquarium diets including pellets, flake food, frozen Mysis shrimp, and frozen brine shrimp.
The Clowns like to eat, at least once a day for general maintenance purposes. For breeding and optimal health, two to three feedings (not too heavy ) a day. If in good shape and well fed, they will go a week without being fed, but not has a routine thing each and every week of the year.
