Nuer, people who live in the marsh and savanna country on both banks of the Nile River in South Sudan. They speak an Eastern Sudanic language of the Nilo-Saharan language family.
The main point of African scarification is to beautify, although scars of a certain type, size and position on the body often indicate group identity or stages in a person's life. Among the Dinka of Sudan facial scarification, usually around the temple area, is used for clan identification.
The Nuer have a traditional religious worldview usually called "animistic." The Nuer language (Thok Naath) is a Nilotic language of the Western Nilotic group. It is spoken by the Nuer people of South Sudan and in western Ethiopia (region of Gambela). The language is written with a Latin-based alphabet. There are several dialects of Nuer, although all share one written standard.
Is Nya a real person? Nya is not a real person. She is a fictional representation of many children who live in South Sudan.

A young girl, Nya spends much of her waking life walking to and from a large pond, miles away from her family's village. She collects water from the pond into a gourd, balances the gourd on her head, and walks home, where she immediately deposits the water, turns back, and does it all over again.
