The Catholic Church, based in Rome and headed by the Pope, is the oldest institution in the western world.

The success of the Edinburgh Missionary Conference of 1910 led to the merger of the Faith and Order Movement and the Life and Work Movement to establish the WCC in 1937–1938. The official establishment of the movement did not take place until August 23, 1948, on account of World War Two.

The Ecumenical Church Loan Fund (ECLOF) was founded in 1946 as one of the world's first international micro-credit institutions in the service of the poor. Willem Visser 't Hooft, then general secretary of the "WCC in process of formation" played an important role in founding ECLOF.
The Church of England traces its roots back to the early church, but its specifically Anglican identity and its links to the State date back to the Reformation. Henry VIII started the process of creating the Church of England after his split with the Pope in the 1530s.
There are over 19.9 million Catholics in India, which represents around 1.55% of the total population and the Catholic Church is the largest Christian Church in India. There are 174 dioceses in India organised into 29 provinces.
