It is not cruel to allow your pet to function as a blind pet. Blind cats typically are still very happy. They continue to enjoy and remain engaged in life and the world around them—including their humans. Kitties do not need to see you to love you.
Cataracts happen when the normally transparent lens of the eye becomes white and cloudy. This condition is more prevalent in certain breeds, such as Persians and Himalayans. Older cats and cats with diabetes are also susceptible to cataracts. This condition can impact your cat's vision and eventually lead to blindness.
Medical causes for adult or senior cats losing their sight are more common than genetic ones. These include trauma, neurological problems, and high blood pressure. Cats compensate for impaired vision by relying more on their remaining senses, especially smell.
Treatment and prognosisIn some cases the underlying cause of the blindness will be reversible and normal vision may return. However, in other cases, even if the underlying cause is resolved, the damage to the sight may be permanent and there may be no change or improvement in the cat's vision.
Cataracts are the most common cause of clouded vision. Most cataracts develop slowly, but usually become worse over time. Cataract surgery is the most effective treatment to help restore your vision. Other less common causes of cloudy vision include Fuchs' dystrophy, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
Some common signs of a cat dying are obvious changes in their normal temperament, a noticeable increase in hiding behavior, a loss of appetite for both food and water, and changes in their overall appearance. Cats dying will often have seizures as well and will have difficulty breathing.
Often cats with significant kidney insufficiency will become very dehydrated. Cats with kidney disease may also develop high blood pressure. This may cause blindness, behavioural changes or neurological signs.
Individual Cremation: The remains of a cat are cremated, and the remains are returned to the cat's owner for final disposition. The charge varies, as do the costs of permanent memorial urns for pet cremains. Some people choose to save the remains of their pets to be buried with them when they die.
Technically, cats can see in color, but they probably see us — and everything else — in a very different light than we do. Cats have very few of the cones that respond to red light, so their world appears blue, gray, and yellow. However, new research suggests that cats may be able to see some colors that humans can't.
One of the most common causes of sudden blindness in an elderly cat is due to high blood pressure (hypertension). The increased pressure pushes the light sensitive layer (retina) away from the back of the eye and this can happen literally overnight.
Abnormalities with vision are the most common clinical findings with feline hypertension. These abnormalities can include dilated pupils that do not constrict with light, blood within the chamber of the eye, and blindness. Blindness develops because high blood pressure in the eye causes the retina to detach.
Blocked tear ducts, an overproduction of tears, allergies, viral conjunctivitis, and more can be behind your cat's abnormal tearing. Uveitis. An inflammation of the internal structures of the eye, trauma, cancer, immune problems or infections can cause the serious, often painful inflammation of uveitis.
Untreated feline hypertension is a relatively common cause of "sudden blindness." Hypertension often accompanies heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and kidney disease. Cats with any of those conditions should be monitored closely by a veterinarian for evidence of hypertension.
How long do house cats live?
Any damage to your retina, such as a detached retina or artery occlusion, is a possible cause of sudden blindness. A detached retina can cause total loss of vision in the affected eye, or it may only result in partial vision loss, making it seem as if a curtain is blocking part of your vision.
Blind cats begin to rely on their other senses. They might begin to meow more, hoping for sound echoes. They also start to rely on scent and memory.
A person with total blindness won't be able to see anything. But a person with low vision may be able to see not only light, but colors and shapes too. However, they may have trouble reading street signs, recognizing faces, or matching colors to each other. If you have low vision, your vision may be unclear or hazy.
Try ice cubes in your cat's foodThe cube takes on the food's flavor, and while your cat's licking the cube, he's getting more water, too. Ice cubes in your cat's water bowl might work with a cat not drinking water, too. Some cats prefer icy-cold water, just like some humans do.
Even without any special training, pets who see often naturally take to helping blind pets learn their way around and avoid danger. Consider crate training your blind pet if they'll be left alone for long periods of time or confine them to a small space when you leave.
How do blind cats navigate in their environment? Blind cats rely on touch, scent, sound and memory to find their way around. To judge proximity to objects, they use their whiskers a lot more than sighted cats.
Adopting a blind cat may mean slower progress at first, but in all likelihood you'll hardly notice the difference from having a sighted kitty! If you can find room in your heart (and home!) for a cat that has lost his vision, you'll be repaid in full with love and gratitude.
“Consistency is very important.” Myrna adds that having two litter boxes might be a good idea, especially if your house is big. “You should also choose an open litter box to start so that it is easy to approach,” she adds. “Covered litter boxes will be harder to smell and may make a blind cat nervous in the beginning.”
If your cat is displaying any signs of eye irritation, see a veterinarian. Early treatment almost always solves the problem. However, untreated conjunctivitis in cats may lead to permanent eye damage, including blindness.
Keeping a cat safe by keeping him indoors without the tools to exercise his instincts would be cruel, indeed. With this, arguments for keeping cats outdoors simply do not stand up.
While feline photoreceptors are most sensitive to wavelengths in the blue-violet and greenish-yellow ranges, it appears they might be able to see a little bit of green as well. In other words, cats are mostly red-green color blind, as are many of us, with a little bit of green creeping in.
Here are signs of a happy cat:
- Vocal clues. Cats can be very vocal, especially when they're happy.
- A healthy appearance. If cats feel good, they will keep themselves well groomed.
- A relaxed posture.
- Eyes and Ears.
- Social sleeping.
- Playful behaviour.
- A good appetite.
The truth is that cats cannot see in absolute darkness any more than we can. However, they are much better adapted than humans for seeing in low levels of light. They use three clever evolutionary adaptations to allow them to do this. First, as compared to a human eye, the cat eye can let in several times more light.
Cats music researchThe latest research suggests that while cats might like music, they don't care much for human tunes, and respond better to 'species-appropriate' songs with frequencies and tempos that mimic the sounds of purring and birds.
Cat vision precision is even worse than dogs. To give you a general idea for vision precision comparison, humans generally have 20/20 vision, which is a measurement called the Snellen fraction. Dogs are estimated to have 20/75 vision and cats are estimated to have 20/150 vision.
The National Cat Groomers of America recommends cats get a bath and blown dry every 4-6 weeks to keep their coats from getting matted or pelted.
Rest assured, most cat farts are not a cause for concern. They won't pass gas frequently, and when they do, they'll probably be just as surprised as you are. Cats are elegant creatures; you won't always hear it or smell it, as most gas is odorless — dainty and delicate, just like your cat.
