Inositol supplements seem to be well-tolerated by most people. However, mild side effects have been reported with doses of 12 grams per day or higher. These include nausea, gas, difficulty sleeping, headache, dizziness and tiredness ( 36 ).
For people with hypothyroidism, myo-inositol helps cells that produce thyroid hormones become more efficient and faster at building T4 (8, 9). Myo-inositol balances thyroid hormones and reduces TSH, TPO, and Tg antibodies (8).
Inositol is used for diabetic nerve pain, panic disorder, high cholesterol, insomnia, cancer, depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, promoting hair growth, a skin disorder called psoriasis, and treating side effects of medical treatment with lithium.
Inositol hexaphosphate (InsP6) as an effective topical treatment for patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy after breast surgery.
Inositol is a substance found naturally in cantaloupe, citrus fruit, and many fiber-rich foods (such as beans, brown rice, corn, sesame seeds, and wheat bran). It is also sold in supplement form and used as a complementary therapy to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including metabolic and mood disorders.
Enhanced immunity and antioxidant properties also contribute to tumor cell destruction. Preliminary studies in humans show that IP(6) and inositol, the precursor molecule of IP(6), appear to enhance the anticancer effect of conventional chemotherapy, control cancer metastases, and improve quality of life.
Oral administration of IP6 (0-200mg/kg) revealed significant decrease in biochemical markers such as serum iron, total iron binding, serum ferritin and serum enzymes.

Inositol supports your body's normal insulin processing mechanisms. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas and released into the bloodstream. Insulin allows our cells to take in glucose (sugar) and produce energy. When you eat, your body breaks down glucose in your bloodstream.
For anyone who struggles with PCOS or isn't ovulating regularly, studies have found taking myo-inositol may help regulate your cycles and get you pregnant faster. "Myo-inositol improves insulin sensitivity and may be beneficial to patients especially with ovulatory infertility," explains Chen.
Myo-inositol is a supplement that may lead to weight loss in women with PCOS. Inositol is a compound related to B vitamins that helps improve insulin sensitivity. Myo-inositol is a specific form of inositol. In a randomized study in 92 women with PCOS, half were given 4 grams of myo-inositol per day for 14 weeks.
However, inositol deficiency may arise through a plethora of different mechanisms—including reduced food-dependent intake, increased catabolism, and excretion, decreased biosynthesis, inhibition of intestinal and cellular uptake—and can significantly affect several human pathological conditions [66].
The two main types of inositol effective for PCOS are called myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. We recommend taking a 40:1 combination of myo- and D-chiro-inositol to mimic the ratio of these molecules naturally found in the body (5, 6). Typical doses of myo-inositol in this ratio range from 2 – 4 grams per day.
Inositol is a sugar alcohol that is 50% of the sweetness of sugar.
Conclusions: Myoinositol supplement increase clinical pregnancy rate in infertile women undergoing ovulation induction for ICSI or IVF-ET. It may improve the quality of embryos, and reduce the unsuitable oocytes and required amount of stimulation drugs.
Abstract. Introduction The use of 2 × 2000 mg myo-inositol +2 × 200 μg folic acid per day is a safe and promising tool in the effective improvement of symptoms and infertility for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Myo-inositol has been used in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, depression, Alzheimer's disease, panic disorder and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). utilization of myo-inositol for enhancing fertility is 12 months.
Conclusions: Myoinositol with metformin in combination has resulted in significant improvement in the clinical profile with reduction in individual drug dosage in cases with PCOS.
Conclusions. Our findings suggest that the addition of myo-inositol to folic acid in non PCOS-patients undergoing multiple follicular stimulation for in-vitro fertilization may reduce the numbers of mature oocytes and the dosage of rFSH whilst maintaining clinical pregnancy rate.
