Canada geese may be legally shot during the open season (1 September to 31 January, or 20 February inclusive on the foreshore), or under a general licence, by authorised persons (see 'The protected status of wild Canada geese' section of this leaflet).
Swans, geese and other large waterfowl are all capable of breaking every bone in your body and also causing you to be burned beyond recognition. They can do this to hundreds of people at once. All they need to do is clog up the jets of an aeroplane, causing it to crash.
It is perfectly legal to shoot geese on the water (including in Maryland), or for that matter shooting them on the ground also. In some peoples opinion it is not sporting or ethical.
When it comes to North American geese, distinguishing Cackling from Canada is perhaps the most challenging ID. The two birds are virtually identical—so much so that until 2004, they were considered one species: Branta canadensis. In contrast, the largest Canada Goose can weigh twice as much as a Cackling Goose.
These species, which include various ducks and geese, coot, moorhen, golden plover, snipe and woodcock, can be killed or taken outside the closed season (usually 1 February to 31 August), but are protected during the closed season.

Their meat is lean and does not lend itself to roasting. Larsen slices open these fall birds and pops out their breast meat. They he cooks the breasts like steaks, stir fries them, or even grinds them to fill casings and make Canada Goose sausage. And not only are the birds good to eat—they are also fun to hunt.
Beavers may be hunted and trapped, without a licence and during all seasons, on privately owned land by the owner or occupant of the land, or by a resident with written permission from the owner or occupant of the land. It is against the law to disturb or remove a den or lodge without a Damage Control Licence.
Ontario will not open a sandhill crane hunt, but there will be a federal study to determine ways to mitigate the agricultural damage they do. Once near extinction, sandhill crane numbers have bounced back in recent years thanks to agricultural practices that make food available throughout the year.
The best way to keep geese away from your property or pond is to use a combination of products. By placing a liquid deterrent around the edges of ponds and near your buildings or populated areas along with installing decoys in key locations, you can effectively prevent geese from ever returning.
The goose is one of the most intelligent birds. It has a good memory and does not forget people, animals or situations easily which is what makes it such a good watch animal against intruders whether human or animal. This allows the birds to make long trips every day, if necessary, to find their food.
Canada geese are federally protected by the Act because they are listed as migratory birds in all four treaties. Because Canada geese are covered by all four treaties, regulations must meet the requirements of the most restrictive of the four. For Canada geese, this is the treaty with Canada.

Balloons, scarecrows, flags and Mylar tape can be used to deter geese from visiting. While one visual deterrent is ineffective, two or three different types per acre of field or water can be effective, especially when they are used with noise.
The most effective way to scare geese away is with trained goose-herding dogs. Herding dogs convince geese they are not safe from predators. This should only be done by specially trained dogs working with a handler. Dogs handled properly put geese in flight and the geese leave an area entirely.
If you get too close, a goose may attack to defend it. Most goose attacks on humans result in minor or no injuries, but severe injuries can happen. Goose attacks have resulted in broken bones, head trauma, and emotional distress. The geese will then become aggressive if humans get too close to the nest.

For killing and processing a modest number of geese, the method of choice is to use a killing funnel (average length 35-40 cm, entry diameter 25-30 cm, exit diameter 10-12 cm). The procedure is to suspend the goose head down in the funnel (Figure 44). This holds the body and allows the neck and head to protrude.

It is absolutely possible to hunt geese without decoys if you are in the right spot and you are well concealed. In most cases, it will likely improve your chances by adding some decoys to your hunting location but if you do not have immediate access to decoys then you certainly can give these techniques a try.
