The Australian Retailers Association estimates banks charge businesses around $500 million every year to process card transactions. Fees for tap-and-go are about four times higher than EFTPOS and add about 40¢ to a $100 transaction for a retailer or merchant.
Here's how to use a contactless credit card:
- Look for the contactless symbol.
- When prompted, hold the card within one to two inches of the contactless symbol.
- If your purchase is approved, you'll receive confirmation—typically a beep, green light or check mark.
Basically, Contactless debit and credit cards need not be swiped or dipped in a POS machine. A contactless or WiFi card is a CHIP enabled radio frequency antenna embedded debit card. This card can be used all the NFC enable contactless terminal all over the world.
Here's something to look out for on your card: "It looks like a wifi symbol but essentially it represents RFID enabled, so wireless enabled," he said. This symbol means you can tap the card on the reader versus having to insert the card into a reader. The card emits a code by short wave communication.

How to know if your card is contactless. Contactless cards have a wave-like symbol that looks similar to a wi-fi symbol on the front of your card. This indicates that you can pay for purchases by tapping your card at checkout with participating retailers, such as Costco and Target.

Each card has a contactless NFC chip and radio frequency (RFID) antenna, which is why they're sometimes called RFID credit cards or RFID chip credit cards, too. Today, quite a few Visa and American Express cards are contactless, too.

When a maximum cumulative $200 contactless spend limit is reached, you will be asked to insert your card and enter your PIN to complete a transaction. And remember all debit card purchases are protected by Interac's Zero Liability policy.
There is no limit to the number of times you can use a contactless payment card in a day via the contactless method, but there is a caveat to this. Intermittently, your bank may ask for you to enter your PIN to ensure it's you – and not anyone else – that is using your card.
Contactless payments are often declined because of spending limits or contactless payment limits. Because no signature or PIN verification is typically required, contactless purchases are typically limited to a set maximum amount per transaction. This is known as a "floor limit".
