The stock suspension set-up in the 2005 to 2019 Toyota Tacoma consists of a double wishbone with coil springs in the front and leaf springs at the rear. Both the front and rear suspension are fortified with gas-type shock absorbers.
Rear Suspension: Early Tacomas utilize a short leaf spring, with the front of the spring attached to the frame, and the rear of the spring connected to a long shackle. The other end of the shackle bolts to the frame. Both ends use rubber bushings with metal center sleeves. Standard shock absorbers provide cushioning.

In short, a pair of 46mm Bilstein rear shocks on the back of our Tacoma probably would have survived. The fronts certainly came through, but don't read too much into that because that end also features an independent suspension with far less unsprung mass. There's much more unsprung mass pushing energy into its shocks.
adjustments are made using a small flat-bladed screwdriver on the eyelet at the end of the shock shaft. for slower rebound, turn the screw clockwise. the rebound adjuster has about 24 clicks of adjustment. the factory setting is 12 clicks out.
Bilstein's technically superior, patented monotube gas charged design allows the excessive heat from the oil to transfer to the outer surface of the shock body and dissipate more efficiently. The dividing piston also permits the oil to expand as heat builds, preventing aeration (foaming) and viscosity loss.
The correct way to install it is with the boot on top and the logo facing the correct way. Above is Bilstein rear shock 33-187419 for the 2009-2013 Ford F-150. The shock has 12mm eyes on each end, so it could be mounted either way. If it is upside down, so are your shocks!May 28, 2014

On average, if your car has been “babied,†you can expect your shocks/struts to last about 10 years. If you have really used your car like a workhorse, 5 years is probably all you can expect. These shocks are a great way to go. and less expensive than other options. Way better than spacers, they mess with the suspension travel, these shocks don't. I definitely recommend these shocks with or without the adjustable kit and stiffer springs that I needed.
