The jaguar is the largest and most robust of the spotted American cats. Large males may grow as long as seven feet and weigh up to 200 pounds. It is extremely unlikely that this cat occurs in Texas although a rare visit by a wanderer from Mexico is possible.
Mountain Lions have a status of extirpated in Alabama, there have been no confirmed sightings in the state in over 50 years.

Texas is home to three main species of cats: mountain lions, bobcats, and ocelots, all three of which belong to the Felidae family. There are 31 species of cats in this family. Jaguars as previously mentioned however do throw melanistic offering and are native to Texas. They were allegedly wiped out more than 100 years ago but our investigations show there are still isolated sightings of typical spotted jaguars in Texas.
The black bear is a protected and rare species in the state of Texas. Male bears weigh 150 to over 350 lbs., and females weigh 120 to 250 lbs. Male home ranges average 20,000 acres, while females average 5,000 acres.

While other native wild cat species are struggling to survive in Texas, the bobcat's secretive nature, highly developed physical capabilities, and ability to adapt to changing conditions have allowed it to thrive. A slender, dog-like carnivore, coyotes are common throughout Texas and have taken over much of what historically was the range of the red wolf. They have adapted easily to the expansion of human communities into their habitat and can occasionally be found in urban and suburban neighborhoods.

The largest breeding population of mountain lions in Texas occurs in the Trans Pecos region where there are large undeveloped tracts of land.
