Verrazzano Bridge to Begin Collecting Tolls in Both Directions on Tuesday. Split tolling means that tolls will be collected from drivers driving in either direction on the bridge. Previously, drivers only paid the toll when they were traveling westbound from Brooklyn to Staten Island.

For more than 50 years, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City has been misspelled. The bridge was named after the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano - two Z's - who discovered New York Harbor in 1524.
The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to Manhattan- bound traffic from 12:01 am to 7 am Saturday and from 12:01 am to 9 am Sunday. Motorists will be detoured to the nearby Manhattan Bridge or may choose other crossings. One tube of the Hugh L. Trucks must use an alternate route while two-way traffic is in effect.
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, locally called the Verrazzano, is a suspension bridge connecting the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn.
But according to the New York Post, the bridge is actually supposed to do this in high winds. "Suspension bridges – particularly the longest span in North America – are engineered to be flexible and any movements on the bridge were within its safety standards," MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan told the Post in a statement.
With a span of 4,260 feet, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the entire world when it first opened. While only 60 feet longer than the Golden Gate Bridge, it can hold a 75% greater load.
Connecting the Lower East Side of Manhattan with Brooklyn, the Williamsburg Bridge stretches over the East River and carries the J, M and Z subway lines, a bike path and a walkway, in addition to its eight lanes of vehicle capacity. The bridge is toll free.
