You can set the iPad and iPad mini's Side Switch—located on the right side of the tablet near the top—to lock the screen orientation or to act as a mute switch, depending on your preference. To set this, go to Settings > General, and then tap Lock Rotation or Mute in the “Use Side Switch to” section.
At the time, the three small dots on the side of the tablet was marketed as a means to power and transmit information between the iPad Pro and an accessory, such as Apple's Smart Keyboard Cover.
The physical toggle button on iPhone is to put silent vs general sound profile. On iPad you can choose between silent vs general profile or orientation of the screen from landscape to portrait.
Perform a force restart. Press both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the screen for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Charge the battery. If the iPad doesn't boot up after a few seconds, the battery is probably drained.
The Home key sits in the middle of your navigation panel. Irritatingly enough, the panel, which also houses the Back and Recent buttons, eats up a bit of your screen real estate.
How to Unmute the Sound on an iPad via Settings App
- Go to Settings > General > Use Side Switch To.
- Change this setting from Mute to Lock Rotation.
- When you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation, your Mute Button is in the Control Center.
Swipe up from the bottom of the iPad to get to the Control Center and the Mute icon looks like a bell. It's in the row next to the half moon icon. If the bell is white, then system sounds are muted. Go to settings>general>use side switch and change it from mute to lock rotation.
The iPhone has a hardware mute switch, which lets you quickly and easily turn the ringer off and put the iPhone into vibrate-only mode. It's located on the left side (facing the device) directly above the volume rocker. When the ring/silent switch is in-line with the volume rocker, the ringer is on.
Using the iPad's side switch settings to bring back the sound in your app
- Navigate to Settings on your iPad.
- Tap on General and scroll down to the “Use Side Switch to” box and select the mute option.
- Toggle the side switch to the off position and presto!
Answer: A: Answer: A: You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the control center (sipe up twice if running iOs 11), and then tap on the Bell icon to mute all sounds. Alternatively holding down the Volume down button on the side if the iPad for a couple seconds will also mute the iPad.
Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. If you don't hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringer and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker might need service. Contact Apple Support for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Plug the iPad into its power adapter for 15 minutes and then try to power on. If it won't power on, wait about 10 minutes and perform a hard restart on the iPad (press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds until you see Apple logo.)
There's also a small hole located just above the top volume button. This is a microphone, for when you're using your iPhone for video calls or recording videos. If your iPad offers cellular connectivity (in addition to the normal Wi-Fi wireless), you'll find a removable tray on the right side of the unit.
To turn iPad on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. To turn iPad off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then touch and drag the slider from left to right.
If you haven't set Side Switch rotation control, use the Control Center to unlock the feature. Depending on your iPad's software version, you'll either swipe up from the bottom or swipe down from the top of the screen. Locate the Orientation Lock — the lock with an arrow around it.
Swipe upward from the bottom of the Lock screen, Home screen or App screen to open the Control Center menu. Tap the “Mute” icon to mute the device, if the side button is set to Lock Rotation, or tap the “Screen Lock” icon to lock the screen orientation, if the side button is set to Mute.
