The control number is optional and isn't used by the IRS. It's a code that your payroll company can use to identify individual W-2s. Since the IRS doesn't use the code, we don't ask for it on your return.
Box 9: Box 9 was once used to report any advance of the Earned Income Credit, but advance earned income credit ended in 2010 so this should be empty. Advance EIC payments were advance payments from an employer to an employee in anticipation of the employee being eligible for the earned income credit.
You might not know that there's something wrong with your W-2 until your employer sends you a corrected version of the form or what's known as a W-2c. Don't panic. In this case, the IRS will send you Form 4852 so that you can estimate the data that would otherwise be on your W-2 and file your taxes.
"No federal law prohibits an employer from requesting a W-2 to verify past employment or salary history," explained Nathaniel Glasser, an attorney with Epstein Becker Green in Washington, D.C. He noted, however, that certain state laws may ban such inquiries or prohibit employers from asking for the information found
There are a number of reasons why employers may choose to request a W-2 form during the recruiting process. For most, it's a direct way to confirm applicants' previous employment and wage data, which could prove difficult for candidates whose previous employers are no longer in business.
Steps to Request a W2
- Check with Payroll. Like asking for your pay stubs, you can get your W-2 by calling or sending an e-mail to your payroll administrator. Check if they have your mailing address right.
- Call the IRS. Do this if your previous employer isn't answering your calls and emails.
A 16-digit code found on the Form W-2. Taxpayers and tax professionals would enter the code when prompted by the electronic tax return. The Verification Code helped the IRS verify the accuracy of the wage and income information and verify the taxpayer and employer.
If You Must Use Email, Use EncryptionAt the very least, place your tax documents inside an encrypted wrapper such as a password-protected DOC, PDF, or ZIP file. Taking simple precautionary steps to secure your tax documents goes a long way in helping to protect your finances.
The quickest way to obtain a copy of your current year Form W-2 is through your employer. Your employer first submits Form W-2 to SSA; after SSA processes it, they transmit the federal tax information to the IRS.
Use Form 4852 and your last paystub to file income taxesFailing that, you can use IRS Form 4852 to file your tax return. Download Form 4852 from the IRS website and complete it using a copy of your last paystub. Once complete, attach Form 4852 to your 1040 or other tax form and send it to the IRS.
If you haven't received yours by mid-February, here's what you should do:
- Contact your employer. You should first ask your employer to give you a copy of your W-2.
- Contact the IRS. If you exhaust your options with your employer and you have not received your W-2, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
- File on time.
If your W-2 went missing because of a mail snafu, you can use TurboTax to retrieve a copy. As long as your employer issued one, TurboTax can import it.
Please contact the social worker or the local IHSS personnel/payroll office of the county where you work or worked to request a duplicate W-2.

Amazon says that the W2 is available online through their 3rd party company that handles it.
TurboTax does not have a copy of the W-2 or Form 1099. It would have W-2 and Form 1099 worksheets that included the tax data from the forms that were entered. The worksheets would be included in the PDF of the tax return in the tax year the return was completed.
Register at https://my.DollarTree by January 13, 2020. Electronic recipients will receive an email when your form is posted. Paper W-2s for former and current Associates will be mailed by January 31, 2020 to your home address on file as of January 13.
Employers are required to issue W-2 Forms to employees by no later than Jan. 31, 2020. You may receive your W-2 electronically or by mail. Ask your employer for clarification on which delivery method they will be using.
Contact the IRS. If you do not receive your W-2 by the end of February and you have already contacted your employer, you can call the IRS for assistance at (800) 829-1040. You can also visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).
