Conclusively, both products are excellent sources of nutrients for your soil. Soil applied to either of these products end up producing healthy plants. However, between both processes, going for mushroom compost is a better option due to its less tedious process.

- The soil-based compost John Innes No 3 is especially easy to manage, but other composts, including peat-free varieties, are also suitable.
- Compost in grow-bags is often both good value and reasonable quality.
WHEN TO ADD COMPOST TO A GARDENNow (early March) is a great time. Dig in lightly with a bow rake, and leave the compost to rest a week or two before you plant seeds or starts. When using homemade compost or if compost is thick with green matter and fibrous, add to garden beds in autumn.
So, while homemade compost is generally best, there are scenarios where store-bought compost is necessary. It is better to add store-bought compost than to avoid amending your soil adequately because you do not have enough in your own pile.
If they're both so important, what's the difference between compost and mulch? Mulch is any material put on top of the soil around plants to help keep in moisture and shade out weeds. On the other hand, compost is a mixture of decomposed organic ingredients.
