Check if the TV volume is set to the correct level and not muted. If the external source, such as a cable or satellite box has a volume control, check if the setting is muted or set at a low volume.
How to play audio through internal/external speakers on your LG webOS TV. Audio is played through the TV's internal speakers. This feature is available only for models with built-in TV speakers. TV audio is played through an external audio device connected to the digital optical port or the HDMI (ARC) port.
While your LG TV doesn't have a set of analog RCA audio outputs, it actually does have two audio outputs that you can use to connect it to a home theater system, soundbar or audio receiver. When using the Optical Digital Cable connection, set Speakers to Audio system. The steps below are an example on Android TV. Select Display & Sound — Audio output — Speakers — Audio system. Select Sound — Speakers — Audio system.
If the TV will let you leave the internal speakers on with the optical output active then you connect a bluetooth transmitter to the optical input and pair your headphone with it. If the TV won't let you do that then you will need to split the optical output, connect both a soundbar and the BT transmitter to that.

Looks like my LG TV doesn't have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack (outlet) and the red/white RCA males don't fit either. On the Sony I was able to plug the RCA cable directly into the TV. With the Hitachi I couldn't find a useful place to plug the Sennheiser so I plugged it directly into the Cable Box.
Both can pass multi-channel audio, like Dolby Digital. Both cables can be had pretty cheap. The biggest difference is that HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These formats can't get transmitted across optical.
If this is the case, then you need to get an HDMI switcher box. To use this, you need to connect one end of your HDMI cable to your television, and the other end goes into the input of the HDMI switcher, you can then choose the RCA cable outputs and use that to connect the HDMI switcher box to the speakers.
If your Harmon Kardon Receiver and LG TV support ARC (audio return channel) your best connection is via HDMI from the Receiver to the TV (that's already sending video). The audio from the TV is then sent via the same HDMI to the receiver.
Besides having Bluetooth, your LG Smart TV should support LG Wireless Sound Sync. Depending on the TV model, you might be able to connect a Bluetooth keyboard, play music on the TV speakers from your phone, or connect to Bluetooth headphones. To check if you have that option. Click Sound, then click Sound out.

- Turn on both your TV and the compatible Bluetooth-enabled speaker, soundbar, audio system, or headphones.
- Go into your TV's audio setup menu, select Bluetooth and start the pairing process.
- Wait for confirmation that the TV and sound system are paired.

Only the first HDMI port on LG Smart TV, support ARC and should be marked. You'll need a high speed HDMI cable which is sold separately. While you're on this menu screen you might want to turn off the TV's internal speaker since you won't be using it.
