SLEEPING AFTER SURGERY
The best sleeping position to reduce your pain after surgery is either on your back with your knees bent and a pillow under your knees or on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between your legs.ACDF Recovery Time
Recovery time can vary widely. Some patients are able to return to work within a few days or a week after surgery. Others start physical therapy about four weeks after surgery, and continue for 2 or 3 months.After surgery
Most patients will remain in the hospital for one to two days. The surgical site in your neck will be sore for a few days. You will be encouraged to walk as soon as you are able as this will help speed your recovery. You may need to wear a soft or rigid collar for four to six weeks.Pain that moves around.

Driving may be permitted for patients after 1 or 2 weeks of recovery. However, if your surgeon advises you to wear a hard collar, it is recommended that you avoid driving, as this brace will prevent you from driving safely with a full view of the road.
Swelling in the throat area, swallowing difficulties, hoarseness and other side effects generally reach a peak between 2 – 5 days after surgery and will begin to subside. You may want to sleep with the head of the bed elevated for the first 5 days to minimize the symptoms.
Neck Brace
Multiple level cervical fusion patients need to wear a Miami-J collar for 4-6 weeks post-operatively; single level cervical fusion patients need to wear the Miami-J collar for 2 weeks. Driving is prohibited while wearing your neck brace.When Bending, Lifting, and Twisting Are Allowed
Once the surgeon confirms on x-ray imaging that the fusion has completely solidified into one bone, a full return to an active lifestyle—including bending, lifting, and twisting—is permitted.Logrolling prevents excessive bending, twisting, and straining of your spine which could disrupt the surgical repair. Avoiding excessive bending, twisting, and straining will protect your fusion while it heals. Bone healing typically takes up to 3-6 months to occur.
Usually, walking up and down the stairs after surgery is not a problem. Your surgeon will probably want you to limit your bending, lifting and twisting, however, to allow the fusion to heal properly. You will be given additional instructions and guidelines before and after your spine surgery to ensure a good recovery.
Depending on the surgery and your general condition, you may only have to wear your back brace for two weeks or until your first post-op visit. Lumbar fusion surgery patients will have to wear their brace for a longer period of time, up to three months, especially as they return to work and to normal activities.
Even people requiring bigger surgeries like spinal fusion are 90% likely to return to work and stay at work long term. While most people recover from back pain through exercise and healthy lifestyles, those who require surgery can expect to return to work and "get their life back" too.
You should tell your employer you will be out of work for approximately 8 to 12 weeks but may be able to return earlier than that. Walking is the best activity you can do for the first 6 weeks after surgery. You should start out slowly and work up to walking 30 minutes at least twice a day.
Physical Therapy after Spinal Fusion: Weeks 9 to 12. In addition to stretching and strengthening exercises already reviewed in this article, regular aerobic conditioning should be added starting about 9 weeks after lumbar fusion surgery. Aerobic exercise is also important to help the fusion set up well.
Household Chores, Gardening, Snow Removal, Lawn Mowing, Sex
Have someone else vacuum and change the bed linens for a period of two to three months after low back surgery and for three to four months after fusion surgery. These activities cause more back soreness than others. Light dusting and food preparation are okay.Incomplete or recurrent compression of a nerve has occurred
If leg pain, arm pain, buttocks pain, or posterior shoulder pain is still present after surgery has taken place, or is relieved only temporarily after surgery, the nerve may not be fully decompressed or may have developed recurrent compression.Many spinal fusion patients experience discomfort or pain for a long while after surgery that might be aided by chiropractic manipulations. Spinal fusion patients can be at a greater risk of injury if they are not healed correctly before receiving treatment from a chiropractor.
If so, pillows may be used to prop up the upper back and shoulders in an inclined position, or the patient can try sleeping in a recliner or an adjustable bed. Sleeping on the side or back is recommended versus sleeping on the stomach.
ACFD combines this method of spinal fusion with a discectomy, alternatively known as a diskectomy. The vertebrae protects and encapsulates the spinal cord, which sends nerves to various parts of the body. A discectomy alone can often be done as outpatient surgery. However, ACDFs are major surgery.
Talk to your doctor about the possible complications of surgery before you have ACDF surgery, such as blood clots or infections. An ACDF surgery can take one to four hours depending on your condition and the number of disks to be removed.
After surgery, you can expect your neck to feel stiff and sore. This should improve in the weeks after surgery. You may have trouble sitting or standing in one position for very long and may need pain medicine in the weeks after your surgery. You may need to wear a neck brace for a while.
General guidelines after two weeks
This can occur as the nerves heal. If symptoms worsen, please contact your spine surgeon.It is normal to have some neck and shoulder pain and muscle spasms. This pain will be temporary and usually resolves in a few days or weeks. Most patients do not need pain medication after 10 to 14 days. This is usually at its worst three to five days after surgery.
Expectations for Neck and Back Surgery Recovery
After most types of neck and back surgery, you may expect to: Return to work three or four weeks after surgery. Resume driving three to six weeks after surgery, if you're able to turn your neck, and no longer need pain medications that could impair your driving.Hemorrhage or formation of a wound hematoma. Damage to the carotid or vertebral artery resulting in a stroke or excessive bleeding, even death. Damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve resulting in hoarseness. Damage to the superior laryngeal nerve resulting in swallowing disturbance.
