When the highest part, or crest of the wave reaches a particular location, high tide occurs; low tide corresponds to the lowest part of the wave, or its trough. The difference in height between the high tide and the low tide is called the tidal range.
The moon's gravitational pull on the Earth and the Earth's rotational force are the two main factors that cause high and low tides. The side of the Earth closest to the Moon experiences the Moon's pull the strongest, and this causes the seas to rise, creating high tides.

In general, the best tide for surfing is anywhere from an hour after low tide to an hour before high. This gives you 4 hours, plenty of time for most surfers. This is because rip currents going out to sea are much more likely on an outgoing tide, so surfing after low on an incoming tide is best.
It does not rise only at night. Actually the moon is in the sky during the day just as long as it is in the sky during the night, it's only that it's very difficult to see it during the day because the Sun is too bright in comparison. And thus, tidal waves rise as much during the night as they do during the day.
For swimmers, the water is safest during a slack tide, during which the water moves very little. A slack tide happens in the hour preceding or following a high or low tide. Swimmers will also enjoy waves with shorter intervals, which are calmer and less dangerous.
When the tide goes out, it's because the moon pulls all that extra water into the middle of the ocean. It makes a giant bum of water. Only you can't see it, because the ocean is so big. As the moon moves, the bump moves.
High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart, taking approximately six hours for the water at the shore to go from high to low, or from low to high.
Tide and SurfingIf the tide is too high and rising, each successive wave will push higher, while if the tide is high and falling, the energy in the waves will decrease with each wave. As the tide approaches low tide, the waves will be less powerful and flat.
At most places on earth, there are two high tides each day. With each passing day, the high tides occur about an hour later. The moon rises about an hour later each day, too (actually, 54 minutes later). Since the moon pulls up the tides, these two delays are connected.
Because of the angle of the moon with respect to the earth, the two high tides each day do not have to be of equal height. Tides also differ in height on a daily basis. The daily differences between tidal heights is due to the changing distance between the earth and the moon.

The best tide for surfing in most cases is low, to an incoming medium tide. Keep in mind low-tide on shallow surf breaks jack the waves up higher, leaving less room between the water's surface and ocean bottom.
Slack water is a short period in a body of tidal water when the water is completely unstressed, and there is no movement either way in the tidal stream, and which occurs before the direction of the tidal stream reverses. Similarly, the flood may run for up to three hours after the water has started to fall.
