If you only plan to play the main Rocksteady trilogy, then do it in release order: Asylum, City and then Knight. In case you are interested in also playing the prequel, Arkham Origins, then the order would be mostly the same just with a minor change: Asylum, City, Origins and then Knight.
If you haven't played Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City then yes it is worth the purchase. If you did then no it's not worth the purchase.
Batman: Arkham Knight has received an M rating from the ESRB for containing naughty things like swearing and violence.
Batman: Arkham Origins is underrated. The game was great by normal game standards, but not by Batman: Arkham standards. Being the third in the series, this game was well received in general but players were disappointed to see it lacking behind its superior prequels.

If your intention is to play the entire series, then I'd recommend against playing Arkham Knight first. I'd actually recommend playing in release order. Although chronologically speaking Arkham Origins comes first, the design additions to the core gameplay experience are cumulative.
Pretty severe, right? The first ending concludes when you lock the Joker hallucination away in Bruce Wayne's head. That's followed by the showdown with Deathstroke after he assumes command of the Arkham Knight's forces, once the Knight's had an ultimate reckoning with Batman.
Despite being canon to the series, the fact that Arkham Origins alters the first meeting of Harley and Joker is not apparent in later games.
I did not think Arkham Knight was bad. The game was good, the combat in the game is the best I have ever played, the visuals were great, and of course Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were great. Arkham Knight had so much potential, but instead of being a great game its a decent game.
Unfortunately, Batman Arkham Knight is only single-player with the game using a 'Dual Play' mechanic in its place.
The Red Hood is most notorious as being the former identity of The Joker prior to his encounter with Batman. Since Jason Todd changed the Arkham Knight persona, he was able to lay his long-rooted vengeance against Batman to rest, and began to heal the damage that Joker inflicted on him at Arkham Asylum.
Batman did not die, but Bruce did. You see at the end of Arkham Knight, he fears that he will lose the ones he loves. When Batman defeats joker in the battle for the mind, he loses this fear because Bruce is dead. When Scarecrow injected Bruce with the fear toxin, Joker took over him.
How do you skip missions? You can't skip that it's part of the main storyline.
Arkham Batman has never beaten a superhuman with only just his fighting skills. Daredevil beaten bigger threats than Arkham Batman has with less gear. The most amount of men Arkham Batman has beaten at one time is 30 at he took hits while doing it.

If you want to play the game series as they were created, with levels of graphics increasing as you progress through the games and storyline adding to the previous game, then you play them in the order of Asylum, City, Origins, Knight.

Some background: The Joker dies at the end of the previous game in the “Arkham” chronology, 2011's “Batman: Arkham City.” It's not entirely obvious from the story cutscenes in either game, but there are a large number of people who believe Batman killed him (he did not).
Somehow, the ending of Arkham Knight was left completely open while a lot of metaphorical doors were simultaneously closed. The Batman we know and love is gone — Wayne Manor has been destroyed, Bruce Wayne is seemingly dead and Gotham is left without its Dark Knight.

Right now, Warner Bros. hasn't announced any plans for a Batman Arkham Origins PS4 release, and it doesn't seem likely at this point. You also have to consider the fact it wasn't remastered as part of the Batman Arkham Collection, which would have been as good a time as any to finally get it on PS4.

It's around 10-12 hours if you only focus on main story progression. The game is really fun and there is quite a bit or re-playability when it comes to collecting riddles, solving puzzles as well as Challenge rooms gameplay. It's a fantastic game for Batman fans. 10-14 hours without getting riddles.
