In The Lord of the Rings, the mountain is called by the Sindarin name Erebor. The Lonely Mountain is the goal of the protagonists in The Hobbit, and the scene of the climax.

Mount Ruhapehu towers over the lowlands of the North Island's great Central Plateau. The rocky slopes of the mountain were the setting for Hidden Bay, the entrance to the Lonely Mountain in The Desolation of Smaug.
The Lonely Mountain was abandoned for three-hundred and eighty years. However, the Dwarves of the Grey Mountains began to be attacked by the Dragons that still lived in those mountains, and became embroiled in a costly war against them, which forced the Dwarves to abandon the Grey Mountains in TA 2590.
Mount Ruapehu, located on the northern island of New Zealand is famous for its depiction as Mount Doom, and may soon live up to its name. The volcano was used by Peter Jackson to depict Mount Doom from J. R. R. Tolkien's famous Lord Of The Rings.

In T.A. 1300 the Orcs of the Misty Mountains started increasing and harassing the Dwarves. The awakening of Durin's Bane drove the Dwarves from their city. Thorin and Company used the High Pass to cross the Misty Mountains, and witnessed the mysterious Giants. Later they were captured by the Orcs of Goblin-town.

Mount Doom, also named Amon Amarth (meaning Mount Doom) and Orodruin (meaning Fiery Mountain), is an active stratovolcano in Mordor, Middle Earth. It is 2286 meters tall.
Caradhras was the tallest and northernmost of the Mountains of Moria, the three mountains which the great Dwarf city of Khazad-dûm was built under. The other two were Celebdil ("Silvertine") and Fanuidhol ("Cloudyhead"). Caradhras was described as "mighty peak, tipped with snow like silver, but with sheer naked sides".
History. During the Second Age, Sauron chose the land of Mordor as his dwelling-place. He used the fire that welled there from the heart of the earth in his sorceries and his forging. Around SA 1600, Sauron forged the One Ring in the depths of the Cracks of Doom, which was built within Mount Doom itself.
But the mountains were the Hithaeglir, the Towers of Mist upon the borders of Eriador; yet they were taller and more terrible in those days, and were reared by Melkor to hinder the riding of Oromë. So Morgoth was the one who created the Misty Mountains, or at least brought them up to a significant height.

In Tolkien's works, orcs are a brutish, aggressive, ugly and malevolent race of monsters, contrasting with the benevolent Elves and serving an evil power, though they share a human sense of morality; there is a suggestion, among several somewhat contradictory origin stories, that they are a corrupted race of elves.
Why does Bilbo want to hear the elves' opinion of their adventure to the Mountain? Elves know a lot and always know what's happening among other parts of the land. Dwarves think elves are foolish and annoying. What qualities does Elrond possess which makes him a good leader for his people?
Goblin-town was a Goblin dwelling in the Misty Mountains south of the Mountains of Angmar - a network of branching caves and tunnels which stretches out from the High Pass in the Northern part of the mountain range.
Smaug is a dragon whose evil, like Gollum's, is indicated by his isolation. He lives alone in the Lonely Mountain, his only purpose to guard the treasure he stole from the dwarves during the reign of Thorin's grandfather.
