Cancun Island, East Side BeachesThe ocean on the east side of Cancun is what you see on billboards and in travel magazines, the infinite shades of blue in the crystal clear water.
If you want a large, all inclusive resort with half a dozen restaurants and lots of scheduled activities, you'll want to stay in Cancun (or elsewhere on the coast). If you want beach and more of a small town, are happy with smaller hotels or a condo, then, I'd go with Isla.
It's actually not that expensiveBut considering how popular it is and how spectacular the island is, it actually isn't too expensive. Unlike most parts of the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Isla Mujeres doesn't have too many all inclusives. Hence, it's usually pretty easy to pick up reasonable accommodation.
For Isla Mujeres visitors in search of a more isolated island experience, the nearby Isla Contoy offers the perfect day trip. The uninhabited island is known for its lush plant life, as well as for having the most diverse bird sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean.
Simply board the Ultramar catamaran for the 45-minute ride, with a choice of one-way or round-trip ticket from Puerto Juarez (Cancun) or Isla Mujeres. Ferries depart every 30 minutes, making it easy to catch the boat at your convenience.
The Whale Sharks of Isla Mujeres… Every year, as the summer heat descends on the Yucatan peninsula. A truly amazing phenomenon happens to the north-east of the small holiday island of Isla Mujeres. Where, come July and August, the largest known gathering of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) takes place.
Transportation. The most common way to reach Isla Mujeres is by boat. You can catch a ferry in Cancun at Puerto Juarez, Gran Puerto Cancun, or Playa Tortugas. They cost about seventy pesos for a one way trip.
