A full citation fully identifies a reliablesource and, where applicable, the place in that source (such as apage number) where the information in question can be found. Forexample: Rawls, John. The APA Style is an author-date referencingsystem which draws upon the 6th edition of the Publicationmanual of the American Psychological Association (APA). In general, you must document sources when you provideinformation that you ordinarily would not have known beforeconducting your research, and when you provide information that itcannot be assumed the reader knows. You must cite areference when you: Discuss, summarize, or paraphrase the ideas ofan author.
Common knowledge does not include data andstatistics gathered in empirical studies — you shouldalways cite the source of such figures. You do notneed to cite common knowledge because it is widely known,undisputed and easily verified, and it generally cannot beattributed to a specific person or paper.
Be sure to use quotation marks and cite yoursource. Paraphrase: You are paraphrasing whenyou take someone else's words and rewrite them in your ownwords without altering the meaning or providing interpretation.Paraphrases are about the same length as the original.Always cite your paraphrase.
One publisher requires permission forusing 25 words or more from any one source, aggregateover the entirety of your book. This means if you quote 16words in one place and 10 words in another,you must get written permission.
When introducing a source, rather than citing it,that is OK. As you write your summary, you will wantto remind your reader, occasionally, that you are stillsummarizing. Remember, however, that anything that needs anAPA in-text citation will need to refer to author anddate.
