Los Angeles air pollution
Frequent sunny days and low rainfall contribute to ozone formation, as well as high levels of fine particles and dust. While ozone can protect the environment from powerful ultraviolet rays, an overabundance of this ozone can be extremely harmful to the health of people and wildlife.WHO estimates that around 7 million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air that lead to diseases such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections, including pneumonia.

What is Being Done to Reduce Hazardous Air Pollutants? These steps include: reducing toxic emissions from industrial sources; reducing emissions from vehicles and engines through new stringent emission standards and cleaner burning gasoline; and addressing indoor air pollution though voluntary programs.

These six pollutants are carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, ground-level ozone, particle pollution (often referred to as particulate matter), and sulfur oxides.
Use an indoor air quality monitor and other useful methods to test the quality of the air in your home.
- Purchase an indoor air quality monitor.
- Test for mold in the air.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms.
- Conduct a radon test.
Poor air quality results in potential health hazards and often produces a hazy, unattractive ceiling of smog above the basin. This is due to the Lake Elsinore Convergence Zone, where coastal winds block air pollutants from the rest of the South Coast Air Basin.
"Good" AQI is 0 to 50. Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk. "Moderate" AQI is 51 to 100. Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people.
That funnels a stew of nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and other emissions across the Coachella Valley – more than 80% from commuter and freight traffic emissions out of Los Angeles, and another 10% from more than 270 refineries, power plants and factories there.
In addition to irritating the respiratory system and reducing lung function, ozone can actually inflame and damage cells that line the lungs, and make the lungs more vulnerable to infection. Unhealthy air can also aggravate asthma and other chronic lung diseases.
Recently, Los Angeles had some of the best air quality in the world, and San Francisco was in the top 10 as well. Using data from Spare the Air for the Sacramento region last year (2019) recorded four days with Moderate air quality.
