In short, yes, still fully capable of gaming at 1080 and (somewhat) beyond. There are quite a few good benchmarks on the older 3rd and 4th gen systems with up to a GTX1080 putting in some nice frame rates.
The efficient 4th-gen i7 has both a desktop and mobile (meaning mostly laptop) variant. The Haswell desktop processors are largely four-core processors that use the LGA 1150 socket.
The Intel Core i5 ProcessorsLaunched in June 2014, Intel's latest CPUs are codenamed 'Haswell' but are more officially known as 4th Generation Intel Core processors. The familiar i3 /i5 / i7 branding is retained and easily allows customers to identify the budget, mid-range and premium versions respectively.
Go to Start > Settings > System > About. Next to Processor, you will see your chipset listed. You will see your processor and the first number after i3, i5, or i7 lets you know what generation you have.
Intel's 4th generation i7 came out in 2013 and still finds uses in everything from laptops to gaming machines to workstations. Like any good technology, it doesn't stop functioning just because the next iteration comes out. Many are built for a specific purpose that can overlap.
The 4th-generation Intel Core i7 processor family, which first came out around 2013 and 2014, is based on Intel's Haswell architecture.
Only chips from Intel's 8th generation or newer will be compatible with Windows 11. Think mid-2017 onward.
There have been some major developments when it comes to the processing power of laptops. Many are even available with quad-core processors, which can handle several demanding applications at once. And for most users, 4 cores should be more than enough.
That i5 still does alright. It struggles to play some new games but for things that are older/less demanding it's fine. Compare to an i3-10100 and supporting mobo for cost.
Is i5 or i7 better for programming? Good processor and RAM should be your highest priority while choosing a laptop for programming. A laptop with i5 processor is an ideal choice. You can go with i7 processor if you have a huge budget and for a low budget, you can go with i3 processor.
For editing 1080P: You need a 65Watt or 84+ Watt based processor, Core i5 minimum, Core i7 recommended. The best option for you is the 4th Generation Core processors - these are currently the highest performance desktop processors.
Core i7-620M is a 64-bit dual-core x86-64 mobile microprocessor designed by Intel and introduced in early 2010. This chip is a first-generation Core i7 processor based on the Westmere microarchitecture and is manufactured on a 32 nm process.

With its current 4th-Generation Core CPUs (also known by their development code-name, "Haswell"), Intel has been a bit more aggressive with its pricing. And indeed, the Core i3-4130 is a fine choice for gamers who also want fairly speedy general CPU performance, and who plan to use a dedicated graphics card.
For now, the latest line of processors that you see in several laptops is the Intel 8th generation Core processors.

A Core i7 will typically be better for multitasking, media-editing and media-creation tasks, high-end gaming, and similar demanding workloads. Most of the latest Intel Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs have four or more cores, which is what we consider the sweet spot for most mainstream users.

In years past, Intel's Core i5 CPU line-up has generally been built around CPUs with up to four-cores. However, in recent times (like the 9th-Gen Coffee Lake refresh), Intel have upped the ante to six cores for many of their i5 CPUs.
As long as you get a 4th Gen quad core at least, you should be fine, either i5 or i7 it really doesn't matter, if you want to be really future proof, get a hexa core i7, but they're expensive.
Generally, the next generation of laptops is always considered better than the previous generation appliances. Thus, it is evident that the 10th gen i5 laptop should be better than the 8th gen model. The only point of difference between both these laptops is the processor.

Most of the i7 Extreme computers have four cores. However, there are a few models that have six. These models also have larger caches. If your processor isn't listed as an i7 Extreme but just says i7, it's likely a quad-core with slightly slower clock speed and smaller caches than the Extremes.
