The First Ward of Houston, which is located inside the 610 Loop, is one of the city's historic wards. Saint Louis- City Limits, and then go North and immediately east of the river.

If you can get past the oppressive heat, humidity , and mosquitos that last for a very long summer. The flip side of that is that it's a warm climate. Many years in the inner city it won't freeze once.
Houston is a more diverse and less segregated city than Dallas. Compared to Dallas, Houston has slightly better quality/variety of restaurants, museums, parks, and performing arts. Generally speaking the galleria area is good and safe (to me the safest as an area outside of the suburbs). Areas around the Galleria Mall are as safe as any area in Houston which has large numbers of shoppers, large hotels, parking garages and high volumes of traffic.
