There are three types of employment status: employee, worker and self-employed. The three are often not in practice used correctly and the difference is not always known.
The school district is considered a part of the local government. Therefore anyone who works for the school district considered an employee of a local government. Public schools are funded by local taxes and are run by elected officials.
Classified means categorized or labeled in some way. Classified has several different meanings that all have to do with things being sorted in a certain way. It is commonly used to mean secret or confidential, as in that information is classified.
There are many different types of job evaluation systems to choose from. The most common are job ranking, factor comparison, point evaluation and job comparison methods.
Classified and Certified Staff Jobs. Classified staff consists of school employees that do not need certification or licensure to be qualified for the job. Meanwhile, certified staff must have certificate that proves they have obtained the necessary credentials and knowledge for the position.
A great example of a job classification is the army with ranks like private, corporal, and general. Based on this ranking, a grade system is attached to the job, which is often linked to a pay range.

An exempt employee is a term that refers to a category of employees set out in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Exempt employees do not receive overtime pay nor do they qualify for minimum wage. When an employee is "exempt" it primarily means that they are exempt from receiving overtime pay.
Based on the engagement of workers in different kinds of employment, the economy can be broadly divided into three sectors:
- Primary: Constitutes agriculture and allied activities.
- Secondary: Mainly includes the manufacturing activities, along with electricity, gas, water supply, and construction.
Those positions that are non-civil service are filled in coordination with the Bureau of State Employment (BSE) in the Governor's Office of Administration. DEP's non-civil service positions are few in number and are typically senior-level positions or policy, legislative, and communications positions.

When someone says they are a civil service employee or a civil servant, it means that person works for a government agency, whether it be federal, state, or local. Each government entity is responsible for its own employment system, takes care of its own personnel needs, and engages in different hiring practices.
