Thorium is three times more abundant in nature than uranium. Compared to uranium reactors, thorium reactors produce far less waste and the waste that is generated is much less radioactive and much shorter-lived.
The advantages of thorium
And in terms of chemical stability and resistance to radioactivity thorium is a safer alternative compared to uranium. This is much more difficult to do with the material that is created in nuclear reactors fueled with thorium compared to those that run on uranium. The main benefits of nuclear power are that is it more efficient than burning fossil fuels as the amount of energy released from uranium per gram is much more than that of fuels such as oil or coal; approximately 8,000 times more efficient in fact.
However, only a small amount of
uranium is currently being bred into plutonium and only a small amount of fissile
uranium and plutonium is being recovered from nuclear waste worldwide.

Nuclear Has The Highest Capacity Factor
That's about 1.5 to 2 times more as natural gas and coal units, and 2.5 to 3.5 times more reliable than wind and solar plants.Nuclear is the safest source of energy, producing only one-quarter the number of deaths per terrawatt hour as wind, which is the second safest. Coal is by far the most dangerous, producing deaths both in the mining and transportation and in its emissions of air pollution.
Nuclear power plants actually emit fewer radioactive materials into the environment than a traditional coal-burning plant. It is estimated that nuclear facilities have saved 1.84 million lives since their inception by preventing the release of countless amounts of harmful pollutants/emissions.

Uranium abundance: At the current rate of uranium consumption with conventional reactors, the world supply of viable uranium, which is the most common nuclear fuel, will last for 80 years. Scaling consumption up to 15 TW, the viable uranium supply will last for less than 5 years.
Is uranium more expensive than gold? - Quora. Uranium ore is essentially free. The price for black market weapons grade uranium is much more. This shows AB $10,000 per gram.
From a chemical point of view, uranium is a heavy metal and about as toxic as lead. Touching it won't really do anything to you. Ingesting or inhaling it would be bad, but as long as you don't have any cuts on your hands and wash them when you're done you're unlikely to have any problems.
At high doses, uranium can directly cause kidneys and lungs to fail, according to the CDC. Like plutonium, uranium emits alpha radiation. Uranium may also decay into radon, which has been tied to an increased cancer risk in several studies, particularly in miners who are exposed to higher levels of the toxin.
In September 2005, IAEA Director General Mohammad ElBaradei reported that "most" highly enriched uranium traces found in Iran by agency inspectors came from imported centrifuge components, validating Iran's claim that the traces were due to contamination.

When fuel rods in a nuclear reactor are “spent,” or no longer usable, they are removed from the reactor core and replaced with fresh fuel rods. The spent fuel rods are still highly radioactive and continue to generate significant heat for decades.
The mining of uranium
Uranium is found in small amounts in most rocks, and even in seawater. Uranium mines operate in many countries, but more than 85% of uranium is produced in six countries: Kazakhstan, Canada, Australia, Namibia, Niger, and Russia.Answer: 1 kg of uranium delivers 470,000×0.38/3.6=49,600 kWhelectrical.
1 gram of Uranium-235 releases ≈ 10 11 joules (=2,070*1010 /235) or 1 Mega Watt day (MWd).
The amount of Uranium commercially recoverable depends upon the market price of the metal. The market price in mid 2010 is around US$100/kg, after peaking at over $300/kg in 2007.
In the oxide form, uranium can be disposed of as low-level radioactive waste at an approved disposal facility.

However, since any Plutonium can be used to create a bomb, no matter how unstable, Plutonium is considered the material most used in the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Its production as a by product of Uranium reactors means that harvesting it requires much less energy than creating enriched Uranium.
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nuclear bomb needs about 33 pounds (15 kilograms) of enriched uranium to be operational. The bulkiness of other bomb materials also make it harder to apply the technology to existing long-range missile systems.
Your 12-foot-long fuel rod full of those uranium pellet, lasts about six years in a reactor, until the fission process uses that uranium fuel up.
The primary difference is the atomic number: uranium has 92 protons, plutonium has 94 protons. Plutonium-239 is easier to fission than uranium-235, produces more neutrons per fission, and has a smaller delayed neutron fraction. So plutonium-239 makes a better reactor fuel and nuclear weapon.
Uranium has the advantage of being a highly concentrated source of energy which is easily and cheaply transportable. The quantities needed are very much less than for coal or oil. One kilogram of natural uranium will yield about 20,000 times as much energy as the same amount of coal.
Their findings suggest that the cost per kilowatt (KW) for utility-scale solar is less than $1,000, while the comparable cost per KW for nuclear power is between $6,500 and $12,250. At present estimates, the Vogtle nuclear plant will cost about $10,300 per KW, near the top of Lazard's range.
Facts: Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest sources of energy in the United States, emitting no greenhouse gases when generating electricity. It's our only carbon-free energy source that operates around the clock for 18 to 24 months at a time. Nuclear power plants don't burn anything.
1 kilogram of coal will produce 2.4 kilowatt hours of electricity. 1 kilogram of enriched uranium fuel will produce about 320,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
Nuclear energy is by far the safest energy source in this comparison – it results in more than 442 times fewer deaths than the 'dirtiest' forms of coal; 330 times fewer than coal; 250 times less than oil; and 38 times fewer than gas. If they got their energy from nuclear power, in most years there would be no deaths.
Nuclear energy isn't just bad for the environment, it's bad for our economy. Nuclear power plants are expensive to build, prompting Wall Street to call new nuclear a “bet the farm” risk. Every nuclear plant under construction in the United States is well behind schedule and at least $1 billion over budget.
Generally, a nuclear power plant is significantly more expensive to build than an equivalent coal-fueled or gas-fueled plant. If natural gas is plentiful and cheap operating costs of conventional power plants is less. The cost of climate change through emissions of greenhouse gases is hard to estimate.
The 104 nuclear units in the U.S. generate substantial domestic economic value in electricity sales and revenue - $40-$50 billion each year - with over 100,000 workers contributing to production. Nuclear energy is the only proven technology that can provide emission-free, affordable baseload electricity.
Most Efficient Energy Sources
Although there are many types of energy, the most efficient forms are renewable: hydro-thermal, tidal, wind, and solar. Solar energy has been proven to be the most efficient and effective among renewable energy sources for home and commercial use.
