A router connects your devices to each other and, in hard-wired setups, to the modem. The router connects to your modem and then to your devices (laptops, smart TVs, printers, etc.) via either an Ethernet cable or WiFi signal. However, a router doesn't need to connect to a modem to function.
Finally, although the old dial-up modems used for computers are becoming increasingly scarce, they still exist in various FAX devices, including some FAX capable PSC type printer systems. Dial up modems are still used by satellite boxes, alarm systems and similar systems that do not require an 'always-on' connection.

Dial-up is NOT a type of broadband Internet connection. The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access.
