Kerala has two rainy seasons, the first starts in June and the second in mid-October and finally ends around mid-November. Unlike some other places, the monsoons in Kerala do not take the form of incessant rain over days and weeks.
Holidays were announced today, i.e. July 22, 2019, for school and educational institutions in Kannur, Kasargod, and parts of Kottayam due to heavy rainfall in the state. Heavy rains under the influence of South-west monsoon have been predicted in the state and there is a red alert in some districts of the state.
“Under the influence of wind discontinuity across peninsular India, fairly widespread rainfall/thundershower activity along with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Kerala and Mahe during next 4-5 days,” read the IMD bulletin issued on Sunday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in six districts of Kerala over the next few days. Red alert, denoting extremely heavy rains, has been sounded in Idukki and Kasargod for Sunday. Extreme rain alert has been sounded in Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur for Monday.
ERNAKULAM: Pathanamthitta district, ground zero of Kerala's battle against COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, has declared holiday for all educational institutes for the next three days. Holidays at schools and colleges are the latest in the series of steps Kerala has taken to contain the spread of the virus.
Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority said, "Holiday has been declared for tomorrow in schools and colleges in Tiruvallur, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram. Holiday declared for schools in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Chennai."
The Maharashtra government has declared a holiday on Thursday in all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and the Kokan region as a precautionary measure in view of heavy rainfall forecast. School education minister Ashish Shelar announced this on Wednesday on his official Twitter account.
2019 rain affected Malappuram and Wayanad district. There were landslides and but it is not affected any of the tourist destinations. As of today its vey sunny and life is normal. Now its safe to travel.
KOCHI: Due to heavy rain in Ernakulam, district collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla has declared a holiday for educational institutions, including CBSE and ICSE schools, and professional colleges in the district on Tuesday. “As of Monday evening, no major issues concerning property loss were reported in the district.
Kerala has two rainy seasons. The main one, known as the southwest monsoon season begins around May or June and lasts until the end of September.
Incessant rain accompanied with the rise of water level in rivers and other water bodies have resulted in flooding in many parts of Kerala. It is caused by a change of wind patterns over the region, this change causes heavy rains in the summer and long dry spells over the other months.
Authorities have also issued warnings to all the districts in the state. While Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode received orange alerts, a yellow alert was announced for all other districts. It must be noted that 6 districts are under orange alert today.
