All purchases made in-app and/or on the Depop website, are covered by Buyer Protection and you'll receive a full refund if your item doesn't arrive or if it's significantly not as described.
You can ask to see pictures of the item being worn, or ask for a picture of the seller holding up the item. Be wary if there is only one photo available, and if you reach out and request more photos of a particular item and are denied, move on, it's likely a scam.

At the moment we don't have our own payments system, so all of our transactions go through PayPal, even if you checkout using guest checkout. This means that every transaction on Depop is protected by PayPal Buyer or Seller Protection as well as Depop Protection if anything goes wrong.

Once a scammer has hacked into somebody else's PayPal account (as in the case of the phishing email scam), they can make purchases and send payments with the money from the account they have taken over. PayPal may reimburse the seller if they are able to confirm that the account that made the payment was hacked.
For this reason, there is no processing fee when payment is made with bank or PayPal balance. However as it is a “gift” payment, there is also no Buyer protection as no goods or services should have been exchanged. So yes it was a scam and nothing paypal can do for you.

Connecting a bank account is secure, PayPal never reveals any of your financial information to recipients. Only you can initiate transactions using your bank account, and PayPal sends an email to you whenever money is transferred from your PayPal account. They can't pull funds from your bank account by any means.
The best way to tell how money was sent is to click on the transaction and check the fees. If you were charged no fees ($0.00) then it was sent via Gift/Family and Friends. If the money you were sent does have fees taken out then it was NOT sent as a Gift/Family and Friends but rather as Goods and Services.

Poshmark is way better than both platforms. Although Depop is good for getting rid of odds and ends by branding them as ~vintage~ I've had things sit on Poshmark that sell very quickly on Depop but overall I like the Seller Interface much more on Poshmark than Depop.
