The consequences of too many absences are serious not only for students, but also for parents! Schools handle minor truancy with warning letters, parent-teacher conferences, and other means. However, in some states, parents can be fined when their kids miss too much school.
What's going to happen when you go to court? If this is your first time going to court for truancy, you may be placed in a diversion program and have to complete some community service, pay a fine and attend a class or counseling. Chronic truancy may result in having to repeat a grade.

If your child has finished 6th grade and is not 17 years old yet, they are truant if they have: 7 unexcused absences from school in a row or. 10 unexcused absences from school in one school year. In California, parents have a responsibility to compel their child(ren) to attend school. A parent of a chronically truant child in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade may be fined up to $2,500 or may face up to one year in jail if he or she permits their child to miss 10% or more of school days.
In court, parents are charged with a civil violation, but not a crime. Parents can be fined up to $250 and the judge can order things such as parent training classes, counseling, community service, or other actions deemed relevant to the case. Ultimately, you cannot go to jail for a child missing school.
I've heard a few tales of parents who privately decided to delay entry into kindergarten, waited a year and then showed up for registration to be told by administrators that their child must be registered for first grade, skipping the kindergarten experience altogether. (Kindergarten is not required under Texas law.)
How many days of school can you miss before being held back? Although some states in the US differ in their rules, most schools consider students truants if their absences exceed more than 10 percent of the total days in a school year. Typically, one school year is equivalent to 180 days; so, 10 percent is 18 days.
The average school year is 180 days. So, your child can only miss 18 days of school or 18 days of a specific class (or 9 days if they're on a semester schedule) before the 90% rule affects their class credit.
The fine is £60 per parent, per child if you pay within 21 days of receiving the notice. If you don't pay the fine within 21 days, but pay it within 28 days, the cost will rise to £120. If you don't pay at all, we may take legal action.
Prevention/Solution. If you have a certain number of unexcused absences in school in a state that requires school attendance through age 18 or older, you may be considered a truant at age 18. Check your local and state laws. Attend school when you are required to attend school.

Late ArrivalBeing tardy means coming late to school after the school day officially starts. Schools have different definitions and policies for tardiness. But, all schools count multiple late arrivals toward an unexcused absence. Look in your school's handbook to find its policy on late arrivals.
