They buy food hoping for a quality taste or nutritional value. Recognized brand names typically have shown a consistency in product quality that has contributed to the evolution of the brand. Often, consumers rely on prior experiences or public word-of-mouth when selecting brands.
As Walmart's most extensively developed retail brand, covering hundreds of household consumable items, the Great Value line includes sliced bread, frozen vegetables, frozen dinners, canned foods, light bulbs, trash bags, buttermilk biscuits, cinnamon rolls, pies, and many other traditional grocery store products.

Because this involves paying extra for what some consider an identical product that merely has been advertised and promoted, brand names may appear to be economically wasteful.
Simply put, they are products that stores put their own names or brands on. Store brand products encompass all merchandise sold under a retail store's private label. That label can be the chain's own name or a brand name created exclusively by the retailer for their stores.
Store brands, also known as private label products, "are made to high-level specifications put forth by the manufacturer," Marks say. One reason they're cheaper than their national brand counterparts is that they don't have the research, development, and advertising costs, so they're able to skim that off the price.
When you see a local creamery milk brand selling for more than a generic or store brand, it could be attributed to extra costs that local creamery has that the supermarket plant doesn't. “Similarly, you may buy some expensive brand because you like the look of the label. Fine, it's your choice,” Sumner added.
Are generic drugs less effective? No. Generic medications are just as effective as brand-name drugs. According to the FDA, drug makers must prove that generic medications can be substituted for brand-name drugs and offer the same benefits as their brand-name counterparts.
