assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire.
The Colt AR-15 is a lightweight, magazine-fed, gas-operated semi-automatic rifle. The "AR†stands for the first two letters of ArmaLite.

Semi-automatic-only rifles like the Colt AR-15 are not assault rifles; they do not have select-fire capabilities. Semi-automatic-only rifles with fixed magazines like the SKS are not assault rifles; they do not have detachable box magazines and are not capable of automatic fire.
Pistol Caliber Carbines (or PCCs) are rifles and carbines chambered in pistol calibers: 9mm, . 45ACP, 10mm, etc. By combining low-recoil pistol cartridges with a full-size rifle body, PCCs are easy to shoot and cheap to feed.
The pistol caliber carbine concept is an excellent option for home defense. They feature light recoil and are easy handling for most shooters. They fall in between the rifle and pistol in terms of power, handling, and capacity. With solid self-defense rounds, a PCC can be the right choice.
Some versions of the AR-15 were classified as "assault weapons" and banned under the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act in 1994 within the United States.
There are also Weaver-style rails on the top and bottom of the gun for accessories, such as a light, red dot, or scope. The bolt of this blowback-operated carbine locks open after the magazine empties. Because of its simple design, there is less that can go wrong. The Hi Point carbine has a reputation for reliability.
Export-Restricted – Cannot ship outside of Canada.
The Hi-Point Model C-9 is a polymer-framed, semi-automatic, blowback-operated pistol manufactured by Hi-Point Firearms. It is chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and is rated to accept +P ammunition. It became well known for its low retail price of under $200.
Young families in New York can no longer buy, sell, or trade inexpensive home defense carbines such as the Hi-Point 995 in the State of New York.

A carbine (/ˈkÉ‘ËrbiËn/ or /ˈkÉ‘Ërbaɪn/) is a long gun that has a barrel shortened from its original length. Most modern carbines are rifles that are compact versions of a longer rifle or are rifles chambered for less powerful cartridges. The smaller size and lighter weight of carbines make them easier to handle.
The M4 Carbine rifle is a more compact and lightweight variant of M16A2 assault rifle of the 5.56X45 NATO caliber class. A carbine is essentially a long gun that has a shorter barrel than a conventional rifle or musket.
The M4 Carbine is a
5.56×45mm NATO, air-cooled, gas-operated, direct impingement, magazine-fed, select fire carbine. It has a 14.5 in (370 mm) barrel and a telescoping stock.

The word “carbine†is derived from the French “carabinier,†which literally translates to “rifleman.†Historically, French carabiniers are first mentioned at the Battle of Neerwinden in 1693.
The SKS (Russian: СамозарÑдный карабин ÑиÑтемы Симонова, romanized: Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945, Self-loading Carbine of (the) Simonov system, 1945) is a semi-automatic carbine chambered for the 7.62×39mm round, designed in 1943 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov.
A better title for the link would have been "modern 'assault weapons' are the equivalent of the hunting rifles used in the American revolution." Currently the major difference is that military rifles are capable of firing multiple rounds per trigger pull (either burst or automatic fire) and civilian models are not.
