There are a few ways to tell if your shower cartridge has gone bad:
- Dripping or running water when you turn your shower off (most common)
- Difficulty turning the shower handle, which worsens over time.
- Shower handle gets stuck or “slips” and doesn't turn on the water.
For sink faucets, look at the front of the spout. The logo may also be on the base of the spout, where it meets the sink, either on the front or the back. For shower faucets, look on the round plate (escutcheon) behind the handle, on the handle itself, or perhaps on the actual valve behind the wall.
Repair a shower faucet that won't shut off. Most single-handle, cartridge-style faucets can be repaired in an hour or less with basic tools.
Unfortunately, the answer to how often you need to replace your shower filter cartridge is not quite as easy as saying 'every six months' or 'every 12 months. ' The reason being is that 'average' use when it comes to a shower filter is better defined as 'best case scenario' use.

If you've ever turned your shower on but noticed that there was still water running from the tub's faucet, you may have wondered what was wrong with your shower. If your tub's spigot continues to run even when you turn on your shower, you most likely have an old or faulty shower diverter valve.

What causes low shower water pressure? The issue may be the water pressure reducing valve or the main shut-off valve in your home. The water pressure reducing valve needs to be serviced by a plumber to open it up, but you can adjust the main shut-off valve by hand - just be careful to not apply too much force.
Signs that a cartridge faucet needs repair are water dripping from the spout, difficulty in adjusting the water temperature, hot water entering cold water outlets like toilet supply lines and inadequately heated water at some faucets.

Plumbers are expensive because it is a highly specialized trade requiring thousands of hours to master. Additionally, they make house calls meaning they spend time and money investing in vehicles, tools, equipment and gas to bring to you. They also carry insurance and have other overhead expenses.
