A thick layer of sand allows you to adjustdifferences in the surface, giving you the flexibility tofix a nonlevel surface by adding more sand. Tamp thesand down after leveling, then measure the depth, addmore sand when needed and tamp it again.
To level the sand base for a paver patio:
- Add 1” of sand on top of firm base material.
- Place two level pieces of metal pipe flush with the top of thesand base.
- Run a straight board over the pipes to screed off any excesssand.
- Remove the pipes and fill the voids with sand.

You can use All-Purpose/Leveling/Paversand or Polymeric sand, which permanently adheres thepaving stones together. Joint sand can be poured over thepavers, and then swept into the joints.
Paver Sand. The sand used when building apaver patio or walk is a coarse builder's sand, withpieces ranging in size from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm. It may becalled C-33, all-purpose or leveling sand. A fine grade ofsand, such as joint or play sand, or rock dust is notsuitable for laying pavers.

Apply Polymeric Sand Over thePavers
Make sure to work when the pavers are completelydry. Pour several small heaps of polymeric sand over thepatio or walkway. Do not over-apply the sand, becausethe excess will be hard to remove. You can always addmore sand, as needed.Lay down your pavers in the desired pattern,keeping the distance between each paver as even as possible.For fine fillings like sand, a one-quarter to one-half-inchgap should be sufficient, while gravel and crushed stonefillings can be used in wider gaps.
How to Prevent Grass from Growing Between BrickPavers
- Eliminate the Grass. First and foremost, you'll need toeliminate any grass or weeds currently growing between thebricks.
- Pressure Wash. After eliminating the grass and weeds, pressurewash the brick pavers to remove any excess material.
- Seal the Pavers.
The recommended depth of sand for layingpavers is 1 inch. As one inch is 1/12 of a foot, divide thesurface area, in square feet, by 12 to find the cubic feet ofsand required. For example, a 60-square-foot patio requires5 cubic feet of sand because 60/12 = 5.
