Yes, your old passport will be returned unless it is deemed to be damaged by the UK Identity & Passport Service (IPS). The passport will clearly indicate that it is invalid and it is important that you advise whether any valid visas remain in the passport before applying for it to be renewed.
In general, you should renew your passport if it has less than six months' validity from the date of your return to the UK. So, if your passport runs out at least six months after the date you're returning to the UK, you can carry on and book your trip without worrying.
It costs £75.50 to renew or replace your passport if you apply online or £85 if you fill in a paper form. You must be aged 16 or over (or turning 16 in the next 3 weeks) if you want an adult passport. There's a different process to get a passport for a child.

You can apply for a UK Ancestry visa if all of the following are true: you're a Commonwealth citizen. you can prove one of your grandparents was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. you're able and planning to work in the UK.

Passports are to be sent back to either the UK Passport Office or the embassy or consulate that represents a foreign state in the UK.
You'll need all of the following:
- your full birth certificate showing your parents' details.
- the passport you used to come into the UK or any foreign passport that you're included on.
- evidence of one parent's British nationality, for example their UK birth or adoption, naturalisation or registration certificate.
The old passport may be sent separately from your new passport. We recommend keeping your old passport in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship. If your old passport is linked to a valid visa, you can still use the valid visa.
The Post Office will now let you renew your passport digitally - but it'll cost £15 more than doing it yourself, and you'll have to go into one of the 725 participating branches.
You can't travel on the expired passport, use it for identity purposes, or apply for another visa using that passport. But when you obtain a new passport, you need to contact the Department of Home Affairs so your current visa can be linked to your new passport. This does not happen automatically.
