Ice the bruise with an ice packwrapped in a towel. Leave it in place for 10 to 20 minutes. Repeatseveral times a day for a day or two as needed. Compress thebruised area if it is swelling, using an elasticbandage.
A regular bruise is more spread out and may notfeel like a firm lump. A hematoma usually is not a cause forconcern. It is not the same thing as a blood clot in a vein, and it does not cause blood clots. Bruises thatdo not appear to be caused by an accidental injury may becaused by abuse.
When a hematoma occurs, the body cannot heal thebruise as easily or quickly as a minor injury. As a result,a hematoma stays the same color, firmness, and causes the samelevel of pain even after several days. A person may need medicalattention to find out if the hematoma requires furthertreatment.
This slows down the blood flow to your bruise. That should keep it from becoming worse than if youkept running around. You may want to massage the sorespot when you're resting, but it's a bad idea. Youmay break more blood vessels under the skin and make thebruised the area larger.
Severe bruising (harm score 2–3) may bedangerous or cause serious complications. Further bleedingand excess fluid may accumulate causing a hard, fluctuating lump orswelling hematoma. This has the potential to cause compartmentsyndrome in which the swelling cuts off blood flow to thetissues.
On the day you get a bruise, apply an icepack to reduce swelling as well as constrict broken blood vessels. Those vessels then may leak less blood. Avoid heat. In thefirst two or three days after bruising yourself, a veryhot bath or shower could cause more bleeding andswelling.
Most athletes with contusions get betterquickly with simple treatment measures. Your doctor may giveyou nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such asibuprofen, or other medications for pain relief. Do notmassage the injured area.
An injury typically won't ease up after a fewdays.
"Everyone is different, and it does depend on hydrationlevels, as well as physical fitness, but generally people mayexpect peak soreness to occur 24 to 48 hours afterthe activity. It may last anywhere from one to three days,"Crockford says.Treatment
- Wrap thigh with a wet bandage to insulate skin (acebandage).
- Frequently ice the injury for 10-30 minutes.
- Use crutches for second and third degree contusions.
- Isometric exercises while using ice will controlhemorrhaging.
- Stretching.
- A thigh sleeve or "donut pad" are often helpful on return toplay.
Your doctor may also recommend the RICE method:
- Rest. Protect your injury from further damage by stoppingunnecessary physical activity.
- Ice. Apply ice to your injury to reduce pain, swelling, andbleeding.
- Compression. Wrap your injury with a bandage to provideadditional support.
- Elevation.
A quad contusion is one of the most commoninjuries in contact sports, such as American football. Commonsymptoms of a quad contusion include pain at the site ofimpact, bruising, and decreased range of motion, which may causedifficulty walking. Swelling and deformity of the muscle may alsobe noted.
Both bruises and hematomas result whenblood leaks outside of blood vessels after a trauma.Hematomas tend to occur deep inside the body where damage isnot visible, while bruises tend to be quite visible. However, bruises are not always visible (for example, abruised rib).
If you've received a bad bruise, heavyexercise can also increase blood flow to the injury site andthat could make the bruise worse.
Three days to a week later. Sports injuriesusually begin to heal within 72 hours. By the third day, your pain, swelling, and bruising will likely begin tosubside.
In most cases, thigh pain can be treated with home remediessuch as:
- ice.
- heat.
- over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) oribuprofen (Advil)
- weight management.
- moderating activity.
- stretching and strengthening exercises for the pelvis, hip, andcore.
Can't bad bruises cause blood clots? Thebruise itself won't cause a blood clot. In very rarecircumstances, the hit that caused the bruise can. Ifyou have a severe bruise and major pain and swelling,it wouldn't hurt to see a doctor to check.
As you heal, an iron-rich substance in your blood-- called hemoglobin -- breaks down into other compounds. Thisprocess makes your bruise change colors: It's usuallyred right after the injury. Within a day or two, it turnspurplish or black and blue.
Toothpaste helps break up clots and increasesblood flow in the bruised and affected area. After onenight, you will already notice your bruise getting lighterand a reduction in swelling.
A bruise indicates there's a wound, so in orderto heal the bruise you must heal the wound. Toreduce swelling (and speed up healing), apply ice onand off for the first 24 to 48 hours. The proper way toice is to wrap your ice pack (or frozen peas) in atowel and leave it on the area for ten minutes at atime.
Pain, swelling, redness, and disfiguring bruises arecommon symptoms of hematoma in general. Some symptomsspecific to the location of a hematoma are: Subduralhematoma symptoms: headache, neurologic problems (weaknesson one side, difficulty speaking, falling), confusion, seizures.
4. Heal bruises quickly. Spread VicksVapoRub in a thin layer over a bruise and add salt.Believe it or not, the combination breaks down the blood in thebruise causing it to lighten the discolorationfaster.
This damage causes the blood vessels to leakblood, leading to discoloration of the skin. Unexplainedbruising on the legs can occur in both adults andchildren due to a variety of factors, including injury, age, anunderlying health condition, or even things likemedication.
