Some people feed betta fry egg yolk, but they are usually people that for whatever reason have an aversion to using live foods. But the eggs quickly foul the water, or so I've read. I feed vinegar eels and microworms and they seem to do just fine with those and they are so easy to culture.
The tank needs a filter to help oxygenate the water and help keep the water clean. Lighting is needed to grow out fry, but it can be either standard aquarium lighting or natural daylight. A top on the aquarium is a good idea to keep the fry from inadvertently jumping out, and keep anything from falling into the tank.
Male Betta fish will generally have long dorsal (top), ventral (bottom), and caudal (tail) fins. Often 2-3+ times their body height. The dorsal and caudal fins will often droop due to their length. Female Betta fish will typically have shorter fins about as long as the Betta is tall or shorter.
Old Age. Older betta fish will usually have signs of wear and tear -- such as ragged edges on the fins, lost scales and white spots on the skin. Older bettas' backs may become humped; they may miss when they strike at food. Older bettas may spend more time resting in the plants rather than swimming actively.
It is fully possible that a female Betta can release her eggs without a Male present, though it is not necessarily normal. When it comes to breeding, Bettas don't “lay eggs”. In the sense that I think you're referencing. They breed via eggs, but the eggs are kept and hatched in a bubble nest.
How many babies do breeding betta fish have? Most betta fish will lay between 40 and 50 eggs per spawning. However, this number can vary greatly depending on the fish. Some aquarists who have experience breeding betta fish may find that their fish lay up to 500 eggs.
When you are ready to breed them, start feeding them with live food like live brine shrimp, blood worms, crickets, roaches, and other parasites. Always observe their behavior! You need to see if they are interested in one another or if they are fighting. Some female betta fish will eat their eggs.
Pet store male bettas (PetSmart, petco) generally tend to be past their breeding prime, they tend to wait longer to ship them out, as Kytkattin said above, which results in fish with longer and more devoleved finnage So generally around 8 months to a year old.
They are contented in staying in the same tank unlike the male betta fish. Automatically, male betta can not live together because they are usually extra aggressive and may end up fighting, the reason they are called,”Siamese fighting fish.
Never house two bettas together. The baby would become chow. You should buy a 2-5 gallon tank equipped with a heater and lots of hiding places. "To give them, however small and fragile they may be, a second chance to show their golden hearts."
Unlike male betta fish, female betta fish can live together comfortably in the same tank. When they live together, the cohort is called a 'sorority'. Generally, a good number to keep together is 4-6 female betta fish. Often, plants or aquarium decorations can serve as good hiding places for betta fish.
Baby bettas need to be in at least 80F (26.7C) temperatures, most pre-set heaters don't go up that high. Along with a heater you are going to need a thermometer so that you can monitor the temperature and make sure the heater is doing it's job. Yup they still need conditioned water.
Do They Get Lonely? Betta fish are naturally territorial and should not be housed with any other betta fish because they will fight and injure each other, often resulting in death. They are unlikely to get lonely in their tank; however, if they are in a small tank, they may get bored.
It is recommended to feed your betta fish two to four pellets, once or twice per day. Pellets expand when placed in water and are very filling for your betta fish. Freeze-dried or fresh food can be substituted for their pellet feeding 1 to 2 days per week.
How long do betta fish live for?
As fish go, bettas are fairly intelligent. On a more human level, bettas tend to be aware of their surroundings, like to explore their environment, claim personal areas, and they often develop amusing personality “quirks”.
Bettas like light so that they know when to wake up and prefer a darker environment to sleep. You may have an aquarium light on your tank and if so, it is probably best for you to turn this on when you wake up in the morning and turn it off just before bedtime.
Typically, a baby will not be aggressive, I have seen many very small bettas kept in community tanks with a lot of different fish. Additionally, if you add the betta while other fish are already present before, the betta will not feel that it's HIS territory and that he should defend it, so that will help too.
Although bettas prefer to live alone, they will play with you if you train them. Start by training your betta to follow your finger. Once your fish has mastered this skill, you can teach her more tricks like jumping or flaring. Learning tricks will help your betta fish to avoid boredom and receive exercise.
Male betta fish are known for their long, flowing fins that deepen in color when they feel territorial. Female bettas are less showy; they have shorter, rounded fins and muted colors. Females, born nearly white, change colors throughout their lives.
Bettas are not born with their colors, they grow and develop into them. Your betta is simply maturing and with that comes his adult colors. He will continue to change even more as he ages, perfectly normal.
Most betta fish sold by Petco and other pet store chains are born on breeding farms. These farms are the underwater equivalent of puppy mills and house fish in small containers of putrid water. When the fish are ready to be sold, they are carelessly packed into tiny bags that are pumped with chemicals.
Your Betta May Be OldIf you've had your betta for a number of years then it's actually normal for him sleep more. As he gets older he's going to require a lot more sleep then when he was at his healthiest. If you think this is the case, don't wake him up.
Baby bettas, from fry to 4-6 months of age, should be fed food intended for baby fish, not necessarily bettas. Baby fry should be fed 3-5 times per day, very small meals. Depending on the amount of fry in the system, you may need to feed just a few sprinkles or a few heaps.
Outlined in the food and feeding guide, betta fish can go up to 2 weeks without food for a healthy adult. This is however not recommended because after about 5-6 days a betta fish starts to tap into its reserves and can enter starvation mode.
Remember, betta fish may eat even if they are not hungry. In the wild, betta fish may not know when their next meal is, so their instinct is to continue eating while food is available. Ranked in order, the best betta food is live, frozen, freeze-dried, pellets, and flakes.
When do the males need to come out? I jar them anywhere from 10 weeks to 3 months on average. I can tell they are ready when the males start to be identifiable by longer fins, stronger color and ATTITUDE! They will flare at other fry and start to tear each others fins.
