Sorrento is certainly much more laid back and comfortable for the average tourist than Naples. We stayed in both Naples to see Naples, loved it, , and Sorrento, to see it and to easily access Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. There is a d dedicated bus from Naples airport to Sorrento or get a private driver.
Depending on your interests, I recommend at least 3 days in the area, but if you really want to see all the best places near the Amalfi Coast, it's best to spend at least 5 days on the Amalfi Coast.
There are some good reasons to visit Naples, though.It's actually the birthplace of the original wood-fired Neopolitan pizza, making the city worth a visit for die-hard pizza fans. Its southern location means the city is close to both Sicily and Sardinia, the ancient ruins of Pompeii, and the beautiful Amalfi Coast.

Sorrento is worth a day, just to wander around. It is very touristy. But enjoyable. But one day visit was enough for me.
