References for children's books follow the format for books, but they include the illustrator's name in addition to the author's name. Both names are included because the author and illustrator of a children's book work together creatively to tell the story. A children's book illustrator helps create the entire work.
Include information in the following order:
- author (if available)
- year produced (if available)
- title of image (or a description)
- Format and any details (if applicable)
- name and place of the sponsor of the source.
- accessed day month year (the date you viewed/ downloaded the image)
References to books should include the following:
- The author(s), or editor(s) - by surname and initial(s)
- The title (in italics or bold)
- The edition other than the first (if applicable)
- The publisher's name.
- Year of publication.
- Edited publications.
Basic format to reference a book
- Author or authors. The surname is followed by first initials.
- Year.
- Title (in italics).
- Edition.
- Publisher.
- Place of Publication.
The basic form for a book citation is: Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date.
When you quote or paraphrase from a source (book, article, or webpage) in your paper, you need to insert a parenthetical citation. This citation typically consists of the author's name, year of publication, and page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence. “This is a direct citation” (Chapman, 2019, p. 126).
Book (printed, one author)
- Author/editor.
- Year of publication (in round brackets).
- Title (in italics).
- Edition (only include the edition number if it is not the first edition).
- Place of publication: publisher.
Chapter in a book (print)
- Author of the chapter/section.
- Year of publication (in round brackets).
- Title of chapter/section (in single quotation marks) 'in' plus author/editor of book.
- Title of book (in italics).
- Place of publication: publisher.
- Page reference.
You'll want to take a look at the copyright page, found at the front of most books, and look for edition number, date, and print run number.
Multiple Authors
- 2 Authors: Always cite both authors' names in-text everytime you reference them. Example: Johnson and Smith (2009) found
- 6 or More Authors: If a document has six or more authors, simply provide the last name of the first author with "et al." from the first citation to the last. Example: Thomas et al.
Use reference books (also called reference or background sources, or resources) to get quick specific facts or information or an overview of a subject. Some examples of reference sources are: dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, almanacs, directories, atlases, and handbooks.
What is the difference between Edition and Issue? Edition refers to the limited number of copies of a book or a novel published in a particular year. On the other hand, Issue is a word that is mostly used in the case of print media to indicate the month of the year in which it was published.
Article or Chapter in an Edited Book
- In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): (Author Surname [of Chapter or Article], Year)
- In-Text Citation (Quotation): (Author Surname [of Chapter or Article], Year, page number)
- References: Author Surname [of Chapter or Article], First Initial. Second Initial. ( Year). Article.
- Example.
You should use the publication date in your reference, not the reprint date. The reprint is simply when a publisher has initially published a fixed number of books, say 5000 and when they've all been sold they have to 'reprint' some more, which means the content is exactly the same as the original print run.
The most important thing to remember when citing a short story is punctuation: the name of the short story should appear in quotation marks, while the name of the textbook should appear in italics. List the author of the short story. Write the author's last name, then a comma, then the author's first name and a period.
MLA in-text citation style uses the author's last name and the page number from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken, for example: (Smith 163). If the source does not use page numbers, do not include a number in the parenthetical citation: (Smith).
In MLA, you must provide the author's name, title of the story in quotes, and the title of the website in italics, followed by the word “Web” (to indicate where you found the story) and the date you accessed the story. You don't have to include the URL of the website.
A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the internet. For more on DOIs, see the DOI category of the APA Style Blog.
