Hydrogels can be placed over the skin tear and ifthere is a need to manage exudate, absorbent dressings suchas hydrofibers and alginates can be used. Nonadherentdressings such as soft silicone products, those with apetrolatum base, and mesh are appropriate for minimally exudatingskin tears.
If you cut your finger in a way that aflap of skin is extending over the wound, don't takeit off. As tempting as it may be, removing that flapof skin may prolong your healing process.
Incisions or incised wounds – caused by a clean,sharp-edged object such as a knife, razor, or glass splinter.Lacerations – irregular tear-like wounds causedby some blunt trauma. Abrasions (grazes) – superficialwounds in which the topmost layer of the skin (theepidermis) is scraped off.
Apply a dressing.
Cover broken skin with a thin layer of a topicalsteroid then a thick layer of a cream or ointment. Then, puta wet bandage over the ointment and cover that with a dry bandage. The bandage will help your skin absorb the cream andstay moist. Avoid dressings if you already have a skininfection.Tegaderm™ Absorbent Clear Acrylic Dressingwas effective in meeting the goals for the treatment of skintears, including decreased frequency of dressing changes, protection of fragile periwound skin surrounding the skintear, wound visualization, and moist woundhealing.
The common causes of skin tears are shear, friction, or blunt trauma. Skin tears can occur on any partof the body, but are particularly common in populations withfragile skin, such as the elderly, chronic or criticallyill, neonates and pediatrics.
Fragile or thin skin that tears easily isa common problem in older adults. Aging, sun exposure and geneticsall play a role in thinning skin. Certain medications, suchas long-term use of oral or topical corticosteroids, also canweaken the skin and blood vessels in theskin.
Skin tears are wounds that may look likelarge cuts or scrapes. They're considered acute wounds. That's whenthe top layer of skin (the epidermis) separates from theunderlying layer (the dermis). They may also be fullthickness.
These steps include:
- Use moisturizer on your arms and legs. Dry skin tears all thatmuch easier.
- To further avoid dry skin, make sure you drink enoughwater.
- The foods you eat can also affect your skin.
- Skin tears are often caused by bumping into yoursurroundings.
Stage II pressure ulcers involve a partialthickness loss of the dermis and exhibit skin breakdown, abrasions, blisters, shallow craters, edema, drainage, and possiblyinfection. The Payne-Martin Classification for Skin Tearsprovides classifications by degree of severity of the lesion asCategories I, II, and III.
Skin Tears: An Often Painful But LargelyPreventable Health Care Issue. They are often painful, acutewounds resulting from trauma to the skin, and are largelypreventable.
Dr. Mann's tips for treating skin abrasions are:
- Clean and wash your hands.
- Rinse and clean the abrasion.
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or antibioticointment.
- Protect and cover the abrasion.
- Change the dressing.
- Do not pick scabs.
- Check for signs of infection.
Although pressure ulcers and skin tearsmay look similar, they are different types of injury; skintears are acute traumatic wounds, whereas pressureulcers are chronic wounds.
Thin skin is skin that tears, bruises, or breaks easily. Thin skin is theresult of the thinning of the dermis. Thin skin ismost often associated with aging. But it can also be causedby UV exposure, genetics, lifestyle, and the use of certainmedications.
A skin tear is a wound caused by shear, friction, and/or blunt force resulting in separation of skinlayers.
At this point you can spray an antibacterial painkilling spray like Bactine to the wound and allow to airdry. Apply Tegaderm to dress the wound. Once thewound has dried apply Tegaderm to protect thewound from infection and to promote healing.
Weeping wounds: too much of a good thing.Wound fluid – known in medical language as 'exudate'– is a characteristic of the acute phase of woundhealing. This fluid comes from blood and lymph vessels, transportscell debris and bacteria away, and forms a conducive environmentfor the immune system.
Vaseline® Petrolatum Gauze isindicated for use on minor burns, skin donor sites, tunneling wounds, staple/suture lines, lacerations, abrasions, skingrafts, skin tears, circumcisions, umbilical bandage and lightlyexudating wounds.
Leaving a wound uncovered may dry out new surfacecells, which can increase pain or slow the healing process. Mostwound treatments or coverings promote a moist — butnot overly wet — wound surface. For example, we applya topical antibiotic ointment to a scrape or small cut, and thencover it with gauze or a bandage.
Apply a secondary absorbent dressing pad (e.g. Mesorb)on top of Mepitel. In contoured or jointed areas (e.g. underarm, under breast, inner elbow, groin, deep wounds), ensuresufficient padding is applied to keep the Mepitel held flatagainst the surface of the wound. 7. Fix in place with a suitablefixation device.
It is advised to change your hydrogeldressing no less often than every four days to stop thecovering from becoming too close or attached to the injury site. You can essentially tell if it is time for adressing change due to an abundance of fluid that indicatesthat the wound could be receiving too much hydration.
If your fingertip is completely cut off,do the following: Gently clean the amputated part with wateror, if possible, with sterile saline solution. Cover it ina moistened gauze wrap.
The deeper a cut or puncture wound or burn, themore has to happen for healing. Deeper woundsextend into the dermis—which contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat and oil glands and the support structures, including collagen and elastin—or even deeper, into thebody's fat layer.
