The abstract is a brief summary of the contents of the dissertation. Begin typing the abstract two inches from the top of a blank page with no heading. The abstract should be typed double-spaced with the same typeface and margins as the dissertation.

When an equation is cited from a reference using symbols and notations deviating from those of the thesis, the equation should be rewritten into the convention of the thesis. Add chapter numbers to captions in Word

Every student wants to know how to write a thesis in a month. But before sharing the tips that I have used in my academic journey, we first need to ask: is it possible to write a thesis in such a short amount of time? The answer is yes. You absolutely can write a thesis in 30 days.
If you are under time constraints, you don't want to write a 20,000 word dissertation. As you can see, writing a dissertation in a week is definitely possible. The last one or two days should be reserved for editing and proofreading. You should have more than enough time for these two tasks in 24 to 48 hours.
If you already have a research and you know what to write, then just sit and write without asking. You won't die because of 2 days without sleep. The main thing is to concentrate on what you should do and believe that you can do it. Work confidently and fast.
How to kick-start your dissertation
- Value your own opinions. One great piece of advice I was given once by a tutor was that before you start any essay or project, first write down your own opinions or ideas.
- Find the central argument.
- Quotes and citations.
- Broaden your horizons.
- Go for coffee.
- Check in with your supervisor.
- Remind yourself of your successes.
- Prepare for what's ahead - choose your dissertation topic, write a strong proposal, decide on structure and pin down your research question.
- Tackle the ground rules - plan your time wisely and practise effective reading and note-taking.
On page length basis, around 30-40 pages. The doctoral dissertations are generally around 50,000 words or more. That means, 100 pages or more. This gives a good general idea about how many pages is a dissertation.
In 10,000 words dissertation, the findings or results section of a dissertation consists of 500 words. In these 500 words, it is necessary for a student to provide an in-depth analysis of the results of a dissertation.
The Modern Language Association (MLA) specifies a standard format for essays and research papers written in an academic setting: One-inch page margins. Double-spaced paragraphs. A header with author's last name and page number one-half inch from the top of each page.

The most common font to use is Times New Roman, in black and size 12 points. Other serif fonts (with tails) to consider that are easy to read include: Georgie, Bell MT, Goudy Old Style, Garamond. Popular sans serif (no tails) fonts include: Arial, Tahoma, Century Gothic and Lucida Sans.Document formatting refers to the way a document is laid out on the page—the way it looks and is visually organized—and it addresses things like font selection, font size and presentation (like bold or italics), spacing, margins, alignment, columns, indentation, and lists.
Each agent and publisher may have slightly different submission guidelines — some specifying that they prefer The Chicago Manual of Style or the AP (Associated Press) Style, and some offering style specifics of their own. If you're submitting to one who specifies, naturally you want to give them what they want.
Line spacing is the space between each line in a paragraph. Word allows you to customize the line spacing to be single spaced (one line high), double spaced (two lines high), or any other amount you want. The default spacing in Word is 1.08 lines, which is slightly larger than single spaced.
This happens because Word can "absorb" explicit formatting changes into the underlying style. When this occurs, any other document elements that used that style automatically change to reflect the newly applied format.
'Standard page' means a standardised page containing 1,800 characters (including spaces), which is used to measure the length of a text. The constant 1,800 is defined by the standard ISO 690. This number dates back to when typewriters were used. At that time, one page had 30 lines and every line had 60 characters.
Change the default layout
- Open the template or a document based on the template whose default settings you want to change.
- On the Format menu, click Document, and then click the Layout tab.
- Make any changes that you want, and then click Default.
The field of study, the research question, the hypothesis (if any) or, more generally, the research question that is to be investigated. It should also include a summary of the contents and main arguments in the dissertation. Usually, this comes immediately after the introductory chapter.
Page numbers are centered and at least ½” from the bottom of the page (in the footer). Title Page: Per the Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation manual, the cover page should not include any page numbering.
