Although cranial ultrasound is not used to diagnose cerebral palsy directly, the study can evaluate for other medical conditions that may impact neurologic status and lead to cerebral palsy, including brain hemorrhage and excessive fluid in the brain.
In preparing a patient for a trans-cranial magnetic resonance (MR)-guided focused ultrasound procedure, current practice is to shave the patient's head on treatment day.
Other early symptoms of brain damage can include seizures. An infant may also display certain behavioral symptoms of brain damage like excessive crying, unusual irritability or fussiness, difficulty sleeping or eating, and other signs of general discomfort that have no other explanation.
In some babies the condition is genetic, such as in babies with congenital aqueductal stenosis. Other conditions, such as neural tube defects (like spina bifida), are also associated with hydrocephalus. Other causes include premature birth, infections, tumors or bleeding inside the brain.
Cranial ultrasound for adultsCranial ultrasound may be done on an adult to help find a brain mass. Because the test can't be done after the skull bones have fused, it is only done after the skull has been opened during brain surgery.

Your doctor would order an ultrasound of the neck if he or she suspects a problem or a developing condition in your carotid arteries, lymph nodes or thyroid.
Microcephaly is a condition where a baby's head is much smaller than expected. During pregnancy, a baby's head grows because the baby's brain grows. Microcephaly can occur because a baby's brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size.
Why is it done? Ultrasound is relatively quick and simple test that gives very useful information about the soft tissues in the head and neck region including the lymph glands, salivary glands, thyroid gland and any abnormal lumps.
Macrocephaly refers to an overly large head. It's often a symptom of complications or conditions in the brain. There's a standard used to define macrocephaly: The circumference of a person's head is more than two standard deviations above average for their age.
There are virtually no risks associated with a transvaginal ultrasound, although you might experience some discomfort. The entire test takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and the results are typically ready in about 24 hours.
Carotid arteryCarotid (kuh-ROT-id) ultrasound is a safe, painless procedure that uses sound waves to examine the blood flow through the carotid arteries. Your two carotid arteries are located on each side of your neck. They deliver blood from your heart to your brain.
Transcranial doppler (TCD) ultrasound is a painless test that uses sound waves to detect medical problems that affect blood flow in your brain.
Ultrasonography uses high-frequency sound (ultrasound) waves to produce images of internal organs and other tissues. A device called a transducer converts electrical current into sound waves, which are sent into the body's tissues.
Computed tomography (CT) of the head uses special x-ray equipment to help assess head injuries, severe headaches, dizziness, and other symptoms of aneurysm, bleeding, stroke, and brain tumors. It also helps your doctor to evaluate your face, sinuses, and skull or to plan radiation therapy for brain cancer.
Hydrocephalus is typically detected through a prenatal ultrasound between 15 and 35 weeks gestation. Our specialists are able to confirm this diagnosis with a fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam, which provides more detailed images of the brain.
What Are Signs and Symptoms of Cancerous Lymph Nodes?
- Lump(s) under the skin, such as in the neck, under the arm, or in the groin.
- Fever (may come and go over several weeks) without an infection.
- Drenching night sweats.
- Weight loss without trying.
- Itching skin.
- Feeling tired.
- Loss of appetite.
Lymph nodes. An enlarged cervical lymph node is the most commonly encountered neck lump. The role of ultrasound is to differentiate pathological nodes (e.g., metastases, lymphoma, tuberculous lymphadenitis) from normal/reactive nodes (Figure 1).
Lymph nodes often swell in one location when a problem such as an injury, infection, or tumor develops in or near the lymph node. Which lymph nodes are swollen can help identify the problem. The glands on either side of the neck, under the jaw, or behind the ears commonly swell when you have a cold or sore throat.
This test uses high frequency sound waves to look at your lymph nodes. Your doctor might take a sample (biopsy) from the lymph node if it looks abnormal. You might have this test to find out if melanoma skin cancer has spread from the skin to the lymph nodes.
Often, the terms sonogram and ultrasound are used interchangeably. However, there's a difference between the two: An ultrasound is a tool used to take a picture. A sonogram is the picture that the ultrasound generates.
